Driving from Oregon Coast to St.George in winter
« on: November 23, 2020, 02:39:50 AM »
Hi all,

We are getting very close to moving south to St. George, have been caught up with job negotiations, RV park location etc., haven't even thought about driving south in the winter. Would be heading there first of January. Punched in Google, maps for best route. Anyone familiar with this area? Looking at going south through California through Susanville, Reno, and points south.
Thank you,
Jason Worman l

Gonna be snowy in N California in Jan. Reno too. Might want to head down to Las Vegas via Bakersfield then NE to St George. Its possible to split the storms and you might have blue sky the whole way, just might want a plan B.

Bill,

The thought of chaining up is almost too much, I like your idea, we are in no hurry, could break the drive up per weather conditions.

Jason, don't even think about going via Susanville, Reno, etc!!  Head South on I-5 and hope for no snow going over the Siskiyous.  Keep going South to Bakersfield then take 58 East to Barstow, then I-15 all the way to St. George.  There is still a chance at some snow, but nothing like the Susanville, Reno route.

I live in Las Vegas, I am a native Oregonian, and lived nearly 50 years in Central California.  I know the country!!   Chuckle!!

A good stay is at 7 Feathers in Canyonville Or.  They have road cams up all the time in the Fueling station and you can check road conditions on the pass.  If its a no go you can stay another day in the RV park.
Safe travels

This time of year we use I-5 to 99 at Stockton use the Hwy 4 connection to 99 its short 5 min, 99 is really a good route at this point at Bakersfield we also use the 58 route to  Barstow then take 15 to St. George. All good roads lots of services.

I am not sure how you drive but we make this trip in 3 days from Seattle if my DW is with me make it 5 days.

RON at Seven Feathers, Rollin Hills and Bakersfield RV resort. You will have 4 hours into Las Vegas, 2 hours to St George on this route.

FYI Don't rush out of Seven Feather if the roads look OK plan to pull out around 9AM this will give the road crews time to sand the roads and clear any snow, the drive is only 4 hours to Rolling Hills.

I do carry chains and have no intention of every putting them on, but it's the CA law. Using this route for 25 years and I have never had a problem if the weather is poor stay put at seven feathers and have some fun at the Casino for an extra day or two.

Drive safe

Hi All,

Thank you all for the encouragement, our daughter is getting married December 29th in Medford, Oregon. The plan is to pack up and head that way a day or two ahead of the wedding and stay a day or two afterwards. Will monitor the weather from Medford and then shove off. Will purchase chains before leaving to meet legal requirements. Will be such a relief once over the Siskyou pass on I-5. Planning to take at least 3 days to get to St. George.

Warmly,
Jason

Congrats on the wedding!!
Keep the packaging on the chains you should be able to return these if not used. Some great spots in Medford r Grants Pass unless you get to park with your family or try Valley Of the Rogue.  Hey take them out for some pie at the Powderhorn Cafe in grants pass great breakfast or lunch ( no dinners)

Travel safe
