Michigan to South Carolina
« on: November 25, 2020, 08:43:55 PM »
Anyone know of a good route from Michigan to Aiken South Caroline that doesn’t include driving thru mountains? Have to make the trip for X-mas and would like to take the coach if possible, don’t mind rain and some snow just don’t want to drive thru the mountains with snow and definitely don’t want to have to use chains. Thanks in advance for your input.

Mack,
Assuming you are starting somewhere around Ann Arbor, I'd recommend US23/33 south to Columbus, then over to I77 to SC. The only mountains are in West Virginia, but I77 pretty  much stays in the valleys so shouldn't be a problem. WV tolls are very reasonable. Other routes will get you off the interstate an into some pretty rural areas that I'd avoid in the winter.

In October I went I-75 south out of Marshall MI and came back thru West VA on the way back and wouldn’t like to make either route if I could help it with snow on the road, I’m considering 69 south through Nashville and then heading east to avoid the mountains.

Mack,
I40 between the TN/NC border and Asheville would be downright ugly in the winter IMHO. I've driven both routes multiple times and there is no comparison. You have a very long and relatively steep mountain grade with multiple curves just after crossing the NC border. I'd avoid it if there is any chance of snow or ice. But your choice.

Steve,
I appreciate your insight, I have only made the trip once and was not sure if going through Tennessee would be any better than going through West Virginia but I would have to yield to someone who's done this more than me cuz I've only made the trip once and that was during good weather.

Mack,
If you are concerned about I 77 in WV, consider calling WV Highway Dept.
