air Bags
« on: March 02, 2021, 09:10:11 PM »
I know I have asked this before, but I am getting conflicting information. My mechanic called BAC in Oregon and they said that they are only using Goodyear bags, since  they are having a problem with the Firestones. They would not give a part number, but would sell the bags for around 295.00ea. I believe I have 6 bags on my 06 Monterey IV. Price seems high, Stengel Bros is close by in PA where I can pickup the bags. Will my bags be all the same ?  Are they difficult to change ? My mechanic has read where the lines are difficult to get to and require some cutting in the baggage compartment to get to? any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Grant,
Not sure about "problem w/Firestone". I'd call BCS and find out specifically what they are concerned about. Also quiz your mechanic as to why he has to get access to the airlines anyplace other than where they attach to the bag. Sounds like either he suspects an air leak in a line or he is trying to increase your cost and his profit. The airlines to the bags are very accessible. You may just have a leak at the leveling valves. Also, why do you feel you have to replace all the bags? They are generally long life time items. If it's the recommendation of the same mechanic, I'd get a 2nd opinion before I let him touch my coach.

My mechanic is just doing some research. When I had the coach at Master tech they recommended I replace the bags due to cracking and definite leakage. They checked all the lines and repaired where there were leaks, but it still leaks down. My mechanic is very reliable and he has worked on my coach for over 10 years. I am the one who wants to replace all the bags rather than just a couple of bad ones. We are getting ready to do some long distance travelling and I do not want to have to do this repair while on the road.

Grant,
I don't know what mayor may not be wrong with the Firestone's.  If you have that part number you can cross reference it to other brands.  As far as the air lines being hard to get to that was not my experience.  While I am sure your coach is different than mine, the air lines on mine were all on top of the bags.   The bags had to be accessed by raising the side panels or other trim, but once in there the air lines were the easy part.  Some of the bolts holding the bags in were harder to get to and took more effort.  You may also have to either turn or remove the tires to access some bags.  I won't say it is a easy job, but a decent shop should be able to replace all of them in less than a day.  Good luck with this.

I do not have the part number and was hoping someone on the forum might have it. I presume I have 6 air bags on my 2006 Monterey? some manuals say 6 and some say 8 ?  Are the front air bags the same as the rear?  I was hoping to have all the bags prior to replacing them. any help would be appreciated.

Grant,
https://www.etrailer.com/p-F9294.html?hhyear=2006&hhmake=Beaver&hhmodel=Monterey+Motorhome
Shows the Firestone bag for your coach as F9294. priced at  $275. Suggest you give them a call to verify this bag is for all positions on your coach. Once you have part#s you can probably cross to GYs.

Grant, you should have a bag in front of and one behind each tire in front, and one in front of each rear pair of tires and one behind each pair near the frame rail;  a total of 8.  See lube diagram  pgs. 308-309 of the ‘06 Monterey manual in Coach Assist.

Joel, Thanks, Yes I aired up the coach and crawled under and counted the air bags for a total of 8 as you stated. They appears to be fairly accessible. We will see. Getting the coach ready for a trip to Canton Texas, and Galveston at the end of the month. We are the Looking forward to getting out away from winter and the virus restrictions.
