Strang hand crank
« on: December 03, 2021, 06:55:50 PM »
When I purchased my '06 Monterey 5 years ago, I found a long shaft hand crank in one of the storage bays.  I "assumed" I would eventually find what it's purpose is.  I have found no purpose for it on this coach.  I am hesitant to through it away considering Murphy's law that as soon as I do, I will need it.  Does anyone recognize this (see picture) and can tell me what is for.
Thanks!  Richard

That should have been "throw it away".  I hate it when Autocorrect takes my typo's and changes it something else entirely.

Does your coach have a couple of Girard awnings?  If so, then it's a manual open/close crank for the awning/s.  Near the front of the closed awnings you should see a hole/gap with an attachment for the end of the crank.  I have never used our crank but I have noted that wasps like to build nests inside the awnings where that hole/gap is located.

I have a Girrard awning and one of those hand cranks. I actually use mine to make sure the awning is snugged in when I am traveling.

I do not have Girard awnings.  Mine are motorized Carefree with no manual retract.

     Richard,
The picture of the crank looks like the kind used on scissor jacks on travel trailers. The Girard crank fits into a receptacle on the end of the awning. Fred

Not for awnings… by the look of its business end it’s likely for slideouts.  But it’s aftermarket, and I’m not familiar enough as others here with the slideout mechanism on our ‘06 Monty as to if such a crank could be used on one.  If so, the hydraulics solenoids would have to be released to remove back pressure before trying to move the slide, with crank or with multiple manpower as manuals prescribe.  It could be the handle can only be used on electric slides, like the one your bed is on, I’m not sure.  If so, Richard, you could store it under your bed.

Sorry Fred. I did not enlarge the picture to see the difference in the end of the crank. You are absolutely right.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments.  This definitely looks like the hand crank for gear driven slide outs.  All of my slide outs are HWH hydraulic.  (Joel, I'm surprised that your bed is on an electric slide mechanism, I thought our coaches were just alike.  2006 Monterey Ventura IV's.  It seems that even the same model year coaches were not all built the same.)  I see no reason to carry this any longer, so I will relegate it to the garage pile of miscellaneous stuff.

I thought our coaches were just alike.

Have you heard the of these Coaches referred to as "snowflakes"? No two Coaches are alike.  ;D
