CAT Fuel Priming Pump Filter
« on: May 01, 2023, 02:43:29 AM »
Two years ago I installed the CAT Fuel Priming Pump kit. I did not make a note of the part number for the primary fuel filter that came with the kit. Last year when I went to change the filter, I couldn't get it off. Fearing that I might damage something, I took the Motor home to a local shop to have them change it. I supplied them with a CAT 326-1644 filter per the parts list on the install writeup on this form. They changed the filters and parked the motor home in their. lot. A couple days later when I went to pick it up, it ran for about one minute and then then motor died. I couldn't get it restarted so I left it at the shop. They figured out that I had supplied the wrong filter and found a filter at NAPA (part number 3606) that worked and installed it. I found the CAT installation instructions and it specified a CAT 1R-0770 for the water separator and fuel filter. I can't find a 1R-0770 filter. I really want to put a CAT filter back on.

Time to change the filters again. I tried a CAT 326-1644 again with the same results, the engine won't run. I put the NAPA filter back on and it fired right up

I noticed the NAPA filter has projection that creates a gap between the filter base and mount. The 326-1644 doesn't have that gap. Looking online I have seen a reference to a CAT 326-1644ST,
is that a different filter than the 326-1644?

I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Christian,
The 326-1644 primary filter is for use with the drain bowl per my notes. The 1R0770 primary filter is for use with no drain bowl. The secondary filter is a 1R0751.

I also installed the 24 volt CAT priming filter.  And, Yes it has the 326-1644 filter on it with the plastic view bowl on the bottom.  I am puzzled why that filter is causing problems.  Please let the rest of us know what you find out.

Any CAT location should stock the 1R-0770. Otherwise goggle it as there are a number of sources listed.

Update: I took the Beaver to the local CAT Dealer/shop to have a flush and fill on the coolant and while it was there I had them replace the fuel filters. I was quite surprised when I picked it up and they had installed a 326-1644 primary fuel filter because of my recent problems trying to use that filter. It seems to work fine. I’m a licensed aircraft mechanic and I know my way around engines, but I and my local diesel shop don’t seem to know how to install these filters. I spoke to the tech who did and he said he just followed the manual. We’ll see what happens next year!
