fuel gauge

Hi, Sherol here, not Roger.  I have been checking our fuel level this winter as we were heating with diesel and our aqua hot.  The gauge never went off of full.  Since we knew that was wrong because the aqua hot was only running on electricity (and not keeping us warm) we went to fill up.  The tank was almost empty.  Has anyone else had the fuel gauge stick or not work? It still says "full" even though I know it isn't.  Could it be a fuse?  Wouldn't it be nice if it really were always full?  But this is annoying because we never know how much fuel we actually have.  Any suggestions?

Sherol,
The easy way to diagnose a fuel gauge problem like yours, is to disconnect the wire from the dash gauge to the fuel tank sending unit at the tank. With the key on, the dash gauge should read full with the wire disconnected and empty with the wire shorted to ground. If that is the readings that you get, the dash gauge and wiring should be good, and your problem is either a bad ground at the tank sending unit or a bad tank sending unit.

Sherol,

If you are not in a position to fix the fuel sending unit for some reason, you could add an hour meter in parallel to the 12V burner motor wires on the Aqua Hot. You would take the hours run times about .4 to get gallons used. This also can be used as a maintenance reminder utilizing hours of use. Hopefully the fuel sending unit will be an easy fix.
