Dometic Microwave/convection oven
« on: October 24, 2013, 05:21:19 PM »
I just installed a new Dometic Micro/Convection oven.  Bought it online at C/W for $299. Fits right in and works great.  After looking at a newer Sharp found this online after speaking with the Dometic folks at the Rally in Atlanta.
Price and availability to end soon.......

The price for a high quality Bosch conv./micro. to replace the 19 year-old Sharp custom built into our house above the oven is $800.  They still make nearly the same Sharp model, but it's $600.  Ouch.  The house Sharp is much older than the Sharp in our coach, and has a few less modern features, but is more efficient at cooking.  Not being an electronics expert, and having torn its electronics apart a dozen times, I can't sort out its annoying touchpad fault;  so grudgingly we need to replace it.  I wish Steve Huber lived nearby - I'd have him test the circuit board and touchpad components.

That Dometic looks like it has an easier to use control panel than the Sharp, and the price is certainly right.  Let us know how it performs.  Some models do better than others in one mode or another, like convection cooking or the popcorn function, or have noisier fans, rattles on the road, etc.

Joel,
Thanks for the undeserved kudos. Often the touch keypad fails due to dirt or moisture. If you can get the control panel off, you might be able to remove the keypad module from the back. There is a flexible circuit behind the keys. Dirt or moisture can get in and cause intermittents or failure. If you do get it apart and cleaning corrects it, the unit will probably work for some period and then fail again unless you are able to seal the ingress path, wherever it is.
You might be able to get a new keypad for $100+- (assuming that's the problem). I haven't looked so might be way off. But then, you've still got an old microwave........

It works as well or better than the Sharp.
Sears sells the keypad for $70 but mine was cracked on the bezel of the keypad and no parts available.
Home Depot has the 1875 Sharp at $428.00.

This one built by Dometic for RV's gives me some confidence.  It also comes with a 2 year factory warranty, the Sharp only one year......

Any 30" over the range micro/convection oven will work in the space.  We have a GE Profile; less expensive than the Bosch.

The Bosch is the only one that will fit the space at home;  its not for the coach.  For that application a Profile, Advantium, or the Dometic are good options.  I only mentioned the Bosch to reflect the disparity in prices between Tom and Pam's Dometic and other convection microwaves.
