ELC Question
« on: November 01, 2014, 04:53:40 PM »
My 2002 Marguis coolant was changed to ELC by the PO but he did not remove the water filter.  Do I have a problem if the water filter is still dispensing the stuff needed for the regular coolant???

Thanks
Dick

When the PO changed to elc he could have put just a filter on in place of a dispensing filter. The possible problem you face can be where those filter lines are routed to the engine. The lines were routed VERY close to the exhaust manifold and are prone to get brittle and fail. A failure on the road can lead to a lot of labor. Most of us have removed the filter, lines and capped off the lines where they entered the engine block. Some just capped off at the block. Marty

No, he left the existing filter in place.  I will have it removed along with the hoses but I don't know if it is urgent to do so or if it can wait until a more convenient time to schedule the work.

Dick,
It can get urgent in a hurry if the hose goes while you're driving and you lose the ELC. As Marty mentioned, there is no need to remove the hoses once you plug the ports in the block.

Dick,
Like Steve said, the urgency will only arise if a hose fails, and I can promise you that one will eventually fail. It is pretty rare to see the filter hose that runs by the exhaust manifold last more than 75 to 80,000 miles.

The old SCA dispensing filter should not be a problem to the ELC coolant as it was almost certainly completely depleted before the change over.
