US 50 from Sacramento to South Tahoe?

Has anyone every driven this route?  (US 50 from Sacramento to South Tahoe)  Advice and counsel regarding this route and whether or not to consider alternatives.  Meeting friends in South Tahoe mid May 2015.

50 from Sac to Tahoe is a nice drive, the only part that is a little narrow is from the summit for a little ways on the Tahoe side going along the rock wall. Loads of traffic depending on when you go,,weekends are loaded.
I used to live in Folsom and have been over this route probably a 100 times.
