Caterpillar 6,000 hour hydraulic oil ( Side Mount Radiators )
« on: October 06, 2015, 04:28:39 AM »
Gentleman, there has been several posts on good Quailty hydraulic oil used in
side radiator motorhomes. I have suggested and been having inquiry's on this
subject. With my Caterpillar background I have around the results of ( Service oil
analysis ) or oil sampling.

Caterpillar makes a 6,000 hour hydraulic oil. ( CAT HYDRO ADVANCED 10 ) requires
oil sampling every 500 hours, part number for gallon container #309-6932. One thing
seeing hydraulic oil running in extreme heat conditions and having a clean oil samples
every time samples are required, reduced many hydraulic repairs because of hydraulic
oil breaking down.  Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

Thanks as usual Dave for your shared wisdom!  Also as usual, now I'm concerned again, yes I know I am a wimp when it comes to maintenance on my Baby!  Anyway you mentioned hydraulic oil in your post.  When I had my baseline all fluids and filters changed last May or so, the mechanic mentioned that he put Amsoil ATF in the hydraulics.  Everything is working fine but...  Is this OK?  One of these days I will stop panicking.  It is happening less and less!  Thanks again.

Jerry, I cannot keep sending flowers. Point of concern when I suggest XYZ oil, oil sampling, etc
everyone has a different idea as how to address, when they feel like saving or spending money.
Over the years engine failure and component failure, starts with the oil. Lack of oil, over due
or extended service periods, wrong type of oil meant for job at hand. I have seen many failures
over the years and many were unnessary for whatever reason. I can only suggest my thoughts
on preventive maintance and the very high cost to maintain a motorhome. Seeing and knowing
what a Caterpillar engine and components cost ( life around 15,000 to 18,000 hours before
major rebuild, and most under extreme conditions ). All I'm doing is passing along thoughts
again on preventive maintance. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic
