Summer Suggestions for Traveling the AZ High Country??
« on: May 21, 2017, 06:08:09 PM »
Due to some Medical issues we've had to cancel our summer trip to the NW and I'm now looking at the possibility of spending a bit of time touring the high country of AZ to get out of the heat if my issues permit.  Thinking perhaps late July into August.  In the past we've always headed straight north and never bothered exploring more local opportunities so any suggestions would be welcome.  Hopefully I'll be able to swing a club so golf courses would be high on the list.

Right now I'm thinking about places like Show Low, Payson, Holbrook and etc.  I should have a better idea of what going on after I return form the consult in Houston later this week.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dick

Dan

Two suggestions.  Go north from Flagstaff and hit the state highway over to I 15.  Its AZ hwy 89 I think.  We missed it this time but saw some awesome pictures.
Also if you can go a bit further there is Elephant butte in NE New Mexico.  We met some new Beaver owners that manage a resort there and Google made it look like a great area.

Praying for good news for ya!

Dan,  What campground do the Beaver owners manage?  We go through there and would like to stop and say hello.

Dick,
A few high country possibilities:
Show Low:
Venture In RV Resort is on AZ260 near Torreon and Show Low CC. We've never stayed there but our neighbor in Show Low CC had a class A and would always stay there for about a week to check out their coach before heading south for the winter. They were very happy with the park.
Fools Hollow State Park is on Old Linden Road off AZ260. It has 50A and water and a central dump station. First come, first serve, but is usually easy to get into mid week. All slots are back in. Some have very nice lake views. Fishing from docks and cleaning stations available. Road in has a 26K lb rating but no one observes it as there are usually a number of class A coaches there. We used it when looking for a stick house in ShowLow.
Both of these parks are in Show Low and within a mile of the golf course if you play.

Pinetop:
There are a few parks in the area that we've stayed at but only one I'd even get close to recommending is the one at Hon-Dah casino. Has full hookups. IMHO there's nothing special about it but the time we stayed there it was relatively clean, etc. It fills up fairly fast so call as far ahead as possible.

Flagstaff:
Only park we've stayed at with a coach is Black Barts. It's behind Black Barts Steakhouse and Little America Hotel. Stayed there a number of years ago. Was OK, had pull throughs and full hookups w/50A, level gravel pads.
KOA was crowded and didn't seem set up for big rigs when were there a number of years ago in a trailer.

Jacob Lake:
Never stayed here but have been by them numerous times while hunting on the North Rim. Jacob Lake Campgound is less than a mile southwest of Jacob Lake. Looks OK, Usually busy in spring-fall season so call ahead. Jacob Lake Campground and Picnic area is right across the highway from Jacob Lake (restaurant, motel and service station). Not sure of facilities but looks OK.

Camp Verde:
Area will be a bit warmer than Flagstaff as it is 3100-3500'. Number of nice parks and many tourist attractions in area. Our favorite is Distant Drums across the interstate from Cliff Castle Casino. Resort style park with concrete pads and both pull throughs and back ins.

If you stay in the Show Low area, let me know when and maybe we can get together as we spend time at our place there in the summer.
Good Luck! Steve

Thanks for the responses.

Jacobs Lake is an intersting thought.  We were there year ago with out travel trailer...nasty road up the hill and the blind corners should be interesting in a MH with tow.  Almost had a truck sideswipe us on the way up.

Looking forward to going someplace and I should have a better idea of timing in a couple of days after we meet with the medical team in Houston,  Fly out tomorrow.

If you are thinking of high country as in be a bit cooler, don't forget the south end of the state slopes uphill! We spent a month last winter at 4500 feet a bit north of Serria Vista near Tombstone at the Tombstone Territories RV Resort. Nearby Bisby is worth a look. If you are going to Camp Verde I HIGHLY recommend Zane Grey RV Resort a bit further down the road from Distant Drums, it sits on a nice creek and the entire campground is shaded with cottonwoods with several nice walking trails. Probably the only trees left in southern Arizona. Haven't found ANYTHING I would stay at again near the Grand Canyon, we are too big to fit in the park itself. The area cries out for a Pacific Shores quality development, I swear they could get $100 a night easy.
