Starter solinoid ? Starter / Relay? Engine won't turn over
« on: June 06, 2017, 07:13:18 PM »
Hi everyone

I have a 99 Beaver Monterey w/300/330 HP Cat 3126-b
The coach was unplugged for 2-3 weeks (don't know if that changes any thoughts)
Went to start the main - nothing except clicks
I thought it was the (White-Rogers 111-257D Coil) it wasn't
I hear 2 faint clicks nearby the top of the head of the main at "on" position of the key where the speedometer flips to 85 then back to 0 then I try to start
A click from the solenoid is all I get.

Question: Are there any relays or pressure switches that are in line between the solenoid and the starter?
I plan on testing the starter and attached solenoid (if there is one) then---
My next task would be to take out the starter and test it on the bench.

Any suggestions before I get under the coach?????? Pull the starter and end up dirty again????

Thank You

Tom

Tom,
If you haven't already, check your batteries/battery voltage

I'm with Steve, that certainly sounds like your chassis batteries drained during storage.

Checked the Batteries, They are 6 mo's old.
Unfortunately I didn't check the charge level before plugging in so I don't know if they were bottomed out
I do have a good charger/tender for the batteries that I installed into the engine compartment last year.
The charger/tender is a 12 amp dual charger that is hooked up to the chassis batteries.
It shows full charge 13.4 V on the meter, the computer and my volt meter.

Thank You

Tom

My next step would be the battery bank to chassis ground for security and cleanliness/resistance.  Then that the solenoid in the electrical bay under the driver (see photo below) passes full voltage through when the ignition is on;  it's a common problem device... to the extent that many here carry spares, or have replaced with reliable electronic versions.

After that, yeah move on to the starter's solenoid.

Joel, for future ref. what is the "reliable electronic version?"  What do I ask for?  Thanks

OK GUYS

Here is the results

Ended up with a broken wire on the Pos 1/2 " post on top of the solenoid
What a royal pain
Pulled the starter
Cut the broken wire
Need a 10 or 12 G wire end fem ring to fit the post
Will buy a few tomorrow - get back under the main Thursday
Install (with a jack) the starter - hook up the batteries and get it done and running

With a little luck! We'll be running in a few days

Thank You all for the info and support

Jerry, it's a Cole Hersee solid state relay.  Your best reference is this thread from a few years back:
