entry step not working properly
« on: August 02, 2017, 01:30:21 AM »
I have an 05 Beaver monterey and i'm  having issues with the switch and sometimes when i'm driving, the step will pop out.
I looked under and found a wire , not connected, for the step light .   Also , i found a large 10ga. white wire , not connected,  that looks like it should be a ground.  so,  the light should get its power from the switch??  or from the "step out " sensor?  I do have power at the switch but it doesn't seem to be doing anything.  The step only works if the key is on.  Please HELP!

Steve, Thank you for the response.  One more question.  do you know if the control unit can be opened?  it seems that the step light has a wire that is not connected to anything.  I was assuming that it should go to the control unit???
Thanks, Robert

Robert,
Check for a bad bulb or broken wire first. The wiring on mine has a wire coming out of the light that ties into a junction. From this junction, one wire goes into the control unit and the other (white wire) is not hooked up.

Robert, you should have 2 ground wires ,one from the step motor to the frame  and one from the module to the step. The disconnected ground wire could be your problem.

Robert, Bryan,
Apparently depends on installer or step model. I have a SCS/Frigette and ground is supplied to the light internally to the light housing with only one wire coming out from the light housing, running to the controller as previously described. The un-connected wire color appears orange, not white (after cleaning dirt off it).
Looking at the wiring diagram at the end of the Common Problems write-up, I think the loose wire is for an optional step light switch. This diagram also shows only 1 wire coming from the light.
Also, be sure that step switch is set so step opens and closes with door. If step switch is set so step remains extended regardless of door position, light will not operate.
