Meritor Disc Brake Caliper Clay Based Grease
« on: January 03, 2018, 04:17:34 AM »
Just purchased some Shell Gadus S2 U1000 2 non melting Bentonite Clay based grease.   After looking for this I have found my supplier for this Specific Product for the Meritor Disc Caliper.  The clay based grease is the only product recommended for the caliper lubrication as per Rockwell - Meritor.

Pat,
There is a specific procedure that is required for lubricating the Meritor ADB brake calipers, and if not followed, you can cause premature brake failure. The necessary procedure is detailed in section 13 of the ADB maintenance manual, starting on page 52. The ADB maintenance manual is available online at; http://www.meritorwabco.com/meritorwabco_document/mm4m.pdf

If you have any questions, just call me.

I do indeed have that manual downloaded last year.   Also have viewed the provided video by Rockwell that is quite helpful for the correct procedure for my ADB1560 brake system.   I have also updated my caliper slide pins with the return spring KIT15018 mentioned in the video.  Helps with premature pad wear.  Just thought others would like to know where and what to purchase.   I have never found this info on the site for the proper lube until now.

Anyone know what kind of brakes I have in my 2005 Beaver Patriot Thunder Lexington 40' w/tag? Meritor or?? Special grease? I think I'm supposed to have disc brakes on all but the tag, which are drum. How close am I to being correct? Do my brakes need this special grease?

Thanks!

Bill,
Your coach does not have the Meritor ADB brakes, and therefore, it does not require the special grease. The Meritor ADB brakes were installed on Marquis coaches from mid-year 1998 (Magnum Chassis) through the 2002 model year and on the 2002 Patriot Thunder. No other Beaver coaches use the ADB brakes.

I'm interested in this too.
What brand/model Disc Brakes does the 2005 Patriot use?

Mike,
The 2005 Thunder uses the Bendix air disc brake system like most Monaco built Beavers with air disc brakes. I believe that your brake model is ADB22X. The Bendix ADB22X brakes are low maintenance, and should not need manual adjustment or lubrication for the life of the coach for most owners.

Gerald,

I had asked several shops (local Cat and Cummins dealers) to grease the Caliper and Slack Adjusters with clay based grease. They said they do not have this grease. Reading your post, you said that I may not have the Meritor axle since my coach is 2003 Marquis. However, my manual states to use the clay based grease. Is there any obvious way to confirm if I have a Meritor or Bendix air brakes? Thanks.

Doug, Your coach should have Bendix brakes, but I guess that some of the very early 2003 Marquis coaches could have been fitted with left over Meritor ADB brakes. This is a very easy thing to check because the Bendix and Meritor brakes have a very different design. The Meritor ADB brake uses a bracket mounted air chamber that is hooked to an automatic slack adjuster with a clevis. The Bendix ADB22X brake uses an air chamber that is mounted directly  to the caliper with no external linkage. You can look at the images of the Bendix and Meritor brakes on the Bendix and Meritor websites to verify which ones you have if you are in doubt.

Thanks Gerald. I'll crawl under the coach and see what axle I may have.
