2001 Magnum Chassis Front Brakes
« on: April 30, 2018, 11:02:54 PM »
My 2001 Patriot Thunder 425 (25,000 miles) experienced a front driver side brake and hub over heating problem over the weekend. We traveled 1.5 hours from home location with 20 min. of stop & go traffic. On my arrival i noticed hot gear oil smell from font driver side hub. I inspected and found the Stemco window had distorted from the heat. All oil was still in the hub and the brake pads look worn out at this location but passenger side was OK. I jacked up the axle on driver side after it had cooled the wheel rotated free and there was no play in the bearings. I have researched forum and i see responses referring to lubrication of disc brake hardware. question: does this sound like a lack of lube problem? Who would be the Manufacturer of the rotors and calipers parts? Does anyone have the part #s for replacement pads rotors etc.? Are the rear disc brakes service and parts the same as the front?  All information welcome

Mick,
The problem with your coach is probably that it has been sitting still in storage way too much. The dragging brake will most likely be caused by one of three conditions. First and most likely is rusted/corroded caliper slides. This condition is common on coaches that are never/rarely driven, and with only 25,000 miles on an 18 year old coach, it qualifies as never/rarely driven. The next posiability is a sticking caliper piston. The last possiability is a bad brake hose that has a deteriated linning that acts like a check valve to keep the brake applied after application until the pressure slowely bleeds off.

Your coach has hydraulic brakes, and since my coaches have all had air brakes, I do not know your part numbers, but a call to BCS (Beaver Coach Sales) parts department, should give you that information or another owner may have them.

Mick,

If you have the Meritor product see if you can find the correct systems in the provided link.    I have the Meritor ADB1560 and use this link to trace parts for my coach.    If in fact you have the ADB1560 product there is a Rockwell update spring kit for the caliper slide pins that Not All Are Aware Of.     The link is also provided

Gerald,

Thank you, the brake hose is interesting and logical. I have put 5000 miles on the coach this year. The previous owners had limited RV mileage put on the coach 19,200 between 2 owners. The Coach has air over hydraulic braking Magnum chassis would that have Bosh brake components? If the Coach had air system only would it most likely have Meritor components used on Marquis and 2002 Patriot thunder? Thank you for your reply Pat. 2nd question ABS sensor that plugs into the back of the caliper was there a recall on that part? I now have 2 that are not working because they will not plug back into there receptacle.

Mick,
In 2001 Beaver production, the Meritor ADB brake system was only used on the Solitaire and Marquis. All other model beaver coaches used air or hydraulic assisted hydraulic brakes.

An overheated brake that melts the plastic ABS sensor is the normal reason for the ABS sensor failure that you described.

I replaced all my front brakes on my 2001 Contessa. Air over hydraulic brakes.
I have some of the part numbers, most were from NAPA Auto and Truck parts.

I will try to pull the part numbers from my receipts for you. Give me a few....minutes not days!

This is a follow up to my repair of my 2001 Patriot Thunder 425 Front Brakes
The failure was in the caliper the boot had deteriorated and exposed the caliper piston to the elements oxidation was found on the piston. The weather elements for 10 Years was in south TX close to the coast and add that to low mileage /lack of dive time would be the contributing factor of the failure.
I replaced all brake parts on the front axle.
