Has anyone changed their engine air filter from the one piece disposable to a convention one where you just change the elements?

Gary,
Changing your air filter to a disposable cartage design is posable but not practical because the cost in rerouting and replacing the intake tubing. The most common air filter change on your coach is to replace the undersized filter that Monaco installed on it with the one that was used on the C15 Marquis in 2007. That filter is larger, flows more air with less restriction, will last longer without setting the filter minder, and it will fit your current location and tubing.

Gerald, Do you have a part # for that c15 filter? My filter minder always reads high, even with a new filter.
Thanks!

The C15 filter does make a difference on the filter gauge.

Thanks for the info. This may be a worthwhile upgrade for my '05 Patriot too. If if will fit.

On the Patriot the filter sits parallel to the coach's curbside sort of above the hydraulic tank (not across the rear opening as in the photo).
The filter number you provided crosses to a Donaldson P537449 (specs are 7" inlet/outlet, 13.5" dia body, length 24", 1501 cfm).

The stock Patriot Thunder filter is a Donaldson P537448 (7" inlet/outlet, 11" dia body. 24 " length, 1201 cfm) .

So only the body diameter is different, but the bigger brother filter flows 300 cfm more. I hope I can find an extra three inches of clearance.

On my 2002 Marques with a C12 I installed a K&N Filter and my reminder has never moved.  With the Donaldson filter my filter reminder would jump up to half way mark as soon as I did a full throttle run for any period of time.  The K&N also seems to climb the 8% grade near my house about 2 mile per hour faster.  Here is the information from Amazon on it:
K&N 38-2012S Washable & Reusable Heavy Duty Replacement Air Filter - Replaces RS3518, 88556, EAF5069, P527682, FA3518, AF25139M, CA7140, AF2120, LAF1849, 6556, A74700, 46556

I paid $184.99 and it is supposed to be washable with a hose, no oil required like most K&Ns.

Mike,

As you noted, there is a significant difference in the air intake design between the 2005 and 2006 Thunder. I have seen several posts on the internet discussing design improvements related to the 2005 Thunder model year.

Al,
If your indicator isn't moving over time, it's because the filter isn't collecting particles. Guess where they are going... IMHO a K&N type filter that supposedly works better as it traps more particles is letting particles through. The supposed savings in power, etc. are not worth the possible engine repair costs. Just my opinion.

Al,
I am with Steve concerning your K&N filter. You will get more air into system, witch will give you more HP, but at what cost $$$ in relation to dusting a motor. I would not run anything other than a good, stock air cleaner. Donaldson, Fleetguard, are two that come to mind. Hope this helps.

I agree with Steve and the other post in that a K&N air filter is not an air filter, it is an air strainer at best. I would install used underwear over my air intake before a K&N filter.
