Creeping Windows and front window curtains.
« on: May 19, 2019, 08:05:30 PM »
Hello Fellow Beaver Lovers!

When I purchased our unit last Oct I noted that our windows inner seals were creeping.  How hard would this be to fix or would I have to take this to a window specialist?

Any suggestions on the front window curtain?  The original one is thread bare but the motor is failing and wouldn't pull the unit back into place.  Was looking at MCD for replacement but wonder if anyone else with a Beaver had installed this.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Mitch.

Mitch,
Window seal creep is very common on the SMC coaches. A good shop like RV Glass can fix them. Some have taken a DIY approach and removed the sealant and reassembled the windows but IMHO this is risking moisture and contaminant intrusion, which can cause etching of the glass.
The curtain motor may be slipping on the track. If so, a good cleaning of the track may respolve this. A number of members have installed MCD shades. Do a seach on MCD here on the Forum for their comments.

Hi Mitch, I agree with Steve, windows need professional repairs for best results, a little pricey but well worth the outcome. I put a MCD shade across the front on my coach 3 years ago and it sure beats the 2 visors you play hide and go seek with. The only draw back is the original curtains did a far better job insulating the windshield keeping the cool in on hot days. If you choose to go that route make sure you go to a shop that has installed MCD shades. Once they measure and order them you can't return them.

Fred,

Thank you for the info!  I've only found one shop in Phoenix who advertises to do the install.  I will check to see if I can find others in Arizona!

Lawrence, great timing, we just finished everything you describe. We used RV Outfitters,Bend Or. The MCD front shade was $2130. and we kept the original curtain installed. Mine is slow and drags but it does work ,especially when needed for thermal insulation. E&R RV Interiors can make a new curtain. Elaine made the valance shades for our install. We also had the MCD shades installed on all the windows in the front of the coach.I had 3 windows that the seals were leaking, pulled and resealed.I didnt bother with the ones that just had seal squirmys, thats just cosmetic. We had 3 windows resealed for $1710. The driver side window was the difficult one, they had 2additional hours labor getting it in/out.The estimate was just that,an estimate. If I did that again I would use a dedicated glass installer. We also had both pilot chairs refurbised at $600 each. We love the install now that its done. replacing the Roman shades with the MCDs has brightened up the front, windows open up higher. The front shade is so much more convenient

Wow, great info!  I'm going to have to talk with my better half to steer away from our yearly Mexico trip and head to Bend.  I'm from Vancouver, Wa. so I could just say we are going to visit family! :D
I have 4 years until I retire and I will get most of this done.  Then it's Full time Rving for me and a Traveling RN for her!

Lawrence, I was a big hold out for NOT installing the MCDs for a couple of years. I did agree to have the front window MCD shade installed at first. It replaced SO many things!! The outside shades, the track AND the curtain plus the track and black mesh shade we had. Now we have the sunshade for brightness and the white shade for insulation. I did figure out that since black attracks heat, I should probably retract the black shade when I put the white one down. Since that installation, we have installed MCDs over every window with manual switches for putting them up and down.
The extra "stuff" we were carrying is all gone! Extra room and reduced weight in the coach.
We only have electric switches on the front shade.
Am I sad I waited so long to get these shades? Absolutely!!
