2008 Contessa blowing black smoke
« on: August 22, 2019, 06:42:16 PM »
Hello,
2008 Contessa, C9, is blowing black smoke.  114,000 miles   :(
Cleaned the air filter. It still blew black smoke with the air filter out, at an accelerated idle.
Added a heavy dose of injector cleaner.
It runs well on the road with no dash indicators appearing.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for all feedback.

Are you getting smoke going down the road too (at mid throttle)? Any change when engine is warmed up?

I would check the rubber couplers on the air piping, from turbo to CAC and to intake. If your losing boost you can get black smoke (not enough air going into engine to burn all the fuel)

If you can get the intake pipe off the turbo, take a look inside and see if there is any scoring and grab the impeller and check for movement.

Jill, the number you sent must be motorhome vin number. The prefix for your C-9 should
start with prefix 9DG-xxxxx . Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

Jill, probable area I would suggest to look at and address first is the unit injector electrical
Connector that provides power to the injector. There has been several updates bulletin with
connector in wire harness. What is happening very hot engine exhaust the unit injector ( HEUI )
upward to return back to engine oil pan and the electrical connection is in direct path with this
Return oil bath. Over time the seal of electrical connection will kill power to injector via engine
oil breaking good connection or does not provide injector correct value and injector is still
firing but not correct. Hard thing to find and sometimes Cat ET will pick up event Code 164-7
Incorrect injection pressure. Last update bulletin ( 10 /01 / 2011 ). If you will go to Ask Dave
on technical BAC section. What you will find that cleanup and reseal electrical connection. This
Is allowed since last service bulletin and the one before that was 2003 and this is the field repair
recommended. This is a very common problem as age and miles add to minor problems on the
Road. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic
