difficulty re-inserting transmission dipstick
« on: November 09, 2019, 12:51:55 AM »
When I remove the transmission dipstick and then try and re-insert it, it takes several attempts to get it to go in the last six inches.  It feels like it is hitting an obstruction.  It did this when the engine is not running (I removed the dipstick to refill the transmission through the dipstick tube after draining and changing the filters).  Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

Lonne,
Not sure about your 3126 but on my C9 the dipstick tube is a plastic material and can melt if it gets too close to the turbo. I replaced mine and wrapped it with insulation.

Hi Steve,
The tranny dipstick tube appears to be metal (at least the part I can see), and the exhaust manifold and turbo are on the other side of the engine.

Try twisting and pushing when It gets to that restriction

Hi Jim, Yes, twisting and pushing and jiggling the dipstick is the only way I can get it to go in that last two inches.  It feels like I am trying to get the tip to clear some obstruction that is at the bottom end of the tube.  I wonder if I put a slight bend or radius curve at the last inch of the dipstick if that would help?  I don't use the dipstick to check the fluid level (I use the shift console's electronic code display feature per the manual).  But when doing a transmission fluid change I of course need to remove the dipstick to put in the new fluid.  By the way, I just changed the fluid to Transynd and put in new filters.  I'll do that again next year and then I'll be 100% changed over to Transynd.

Slight curve maybe last half. You can always restraighten. If you can reach, check to make sure the tube is seated to the trans case from underneath. Maybe you can see it from the top using a flashlight.

Lonne,
My error. I read "transmission" and thought "oil". :(
