Carl’s diode is mounted correctly.  Although hard to see, the stripe appears to be on the left side.

I note a lot of corrosion around connection nuts though.  That could be a venue for resistance.  Remove and clean them up and spray with Corrosion-X.  Also put some sort of desiccant device in that bay to help reduce moisture in its air.

Carl,
It's a single rectifier diode to block voltage transients. it you want to test it with an ohm meter, it will show conduction in one direction and open in the other direction,
