Highway 20 Washington State (North Cascades Loop)
« on: January 31, 2020, 01:24:40 AM »
Hi,

I am planning on being in Washington State this coming summer.  Wondering if anyone has driven the North Cascades loop recently.  If so how was the drive?  Any concerns in doing it in a 45 foot coach?

Any thoughts and insights would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Don

We did that last summer.  20 is often closed until mid June.  The trip up to the pass was amazing though there are some slow zones.
we traveled to hwy 97 and then south to hwy 2.  The part of 20 we covered was definately worth it and we found out later that hwy 20 was fine the full way but fuel was a bit scarce on the far end.
I would start with a full tank and just go for it.

Don, The loop is a must, should take you about a week if you start on the west side hwy 2 head east you have to spend a day or so in Leavenworth then over to hwy 97 up the river to Lake Chelan and take the boat trip up the lake to Stehekan then on up to Winthrop where you can spend a few days head west on hwy 20 up over the pass and some of the best views anywhere. There are all kinds of RV parks along the way. Fuel is not a problem along the way although price might not be the best, the hwy's are fine, just 4th gear steep in a few spots your C 13 will just love it.

Once you get up to the area around Burlington, keep a lookout for Acme Ice Cream in the stores. And if you head up hwy 9, stop in the town of Acme at the Acme Diner for a scoop or two. Worth the trip right there! Take a day trip in the toad up hwy 542 to the backside of Mt Baker at Mt Shuksan. If you're there on a clear, sunny day, the views are incredible!

And... if you find yourself coming or going on I-5 looking for a place to stay around Mount Vernon/Burlington, we highly recommend the marina at La Conner. Not far out of your way, uncrowded, full hookups, great fun to stroll the boardwalk in La Conner, great restaurants. Oregon coast vibe. Hidden gem.
