Replacement of a fuel pressure Regulator on a Cat C-9
« on: May 14, 2020, 08:52:03 PM »
Need to replace our fuel pressure  regulator which was a recco from Dave Atherton. Has anyone done this procedure and can share what I should be prepared for. Our symptoms are loss of power and subsequent changing of both fuel filters at 1k to 4k miles. We currently have 177k on the coach. Thanks for any insights

Bryon, the return fuel pressure regulator is located on the rear of engine head with a hose connected to one end and other end connect
To engine head. My suggestion before replacement of regulator disconnect hose on the end of regulator and connect a clear plastic hose
to the male end and put other end of plastic into a gallon container have someone start engine and watch the diesel fuel going into the
Fuel container. What you should be seeing is a stream of clear fuel within air bubbles present. Run engine at steady speed and not speed up and down for two minutes at idle than half speed than 3-4 speed again hold at steady rpms doing test. Again your for stream of clear fuel
with no air bubbles., ufnoaue bubbles present there is nothing wrong with return fuel pressure regulator. Is you see lot of air bubbles than your problem is entry of air on suction side of your fuel transfer pump to fuel tank.where your problem is located causing low fuel pressure, hard starting and low power.   Dave Atherton Rerured Cat Mechanic

Dave thanks again for your input. We will try your test. However we do not have a hard start issue and after I drain the water fuel seperator the engine runs great. You previously indicated it could also be fuel fines interrupting the consistent performance of our fuel pressure regulator

Bryan, yes this correct and you indicated draining primary water / filter were things works fine. This being said the primary filter
is under suction and the secondary fuel is under pressure with diesel fuel fines the return fuel pressure regulator will give problems
a I indicated in last post. Would suggest changing the secondary 1R-0751 fuel filter because it is picking fuel fines from primary
fuel filter Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic
