Technical Support / Re: Fast Idle switch Engine Brake

Beautiful coach you have Zeb and thanks for the diagram, its a beauty, all the nice colors and lines,, wow!!!  I like it.  I see one there on the far left called Idle Increment/Decrement switch, the drawing doesn't show those switches being on the side console, but I see Eng Brake On/Off and Diagnostic On/Off. Blue line "signal" . Im going to go out on a limb and postulate, that is the fast idle switch and it makes a run to the right to pins 35 and 36, Those pins are shown on a drawing in the book of drawings for the coach, I want to say that plug is C43 but, that would be a guess, I don't have the book in front of me.  I believe that to be a signal line going to the ECM. Anyways, thanks again, I'll use it in the future most likely.

I have a similar model and year as your coach, but I can't offer help with your issue other than some diagrams.

Here is my engine wiring diagram in Coach Assist:
https://www.beaveramb.org/resources/Documents/Technical%20Forum/Coach%20Assist/Wiring%20Diagrams/2003%20ISL%20Cummins%20CM554%20Caps%20Wiring%20Diagram%203666416%20.pdf

Also in general for your coach, if it is wired like mine, the 2002-2003 Patriot wiring diagrams are incomplete and some additional diagrams can be found in the 2004 Patriot, and the 2003 Marquis diagrams. While not earth shattering information maybe it will help down the line.

I'd also recommend to also sign up for Quickserve with Cummins to access the manuals and diagrams for your specific engine. You might find there is something on troubleshooting the fast idle or possible what the votlatge is for that pin on the ECM.

Technical Support / Removing decorative window cover
« Last post by Fred Cook on February 26, 2026, 03:29:43 PM »
Trying to remove the decorative window sconce that covers the rear slide window to address a leak coming through the pane. The bottom L brackets are easy but cannot access what ever it is that secures it at the top to pull it off. The MCD day and night shades are attached to it making it even harder to get it off. Any help would be appreciated.

Drivers side fuel fill hose. It is a 2" ID 4' Hose. Every time I would fill up, the fill nozzle would shut off after short fill times making it a difficult tedious job to fill up from the drivers side. Additionally, if I filled up close to a stopping point, it would leak and make a mess at the campground. I got to the point where I would fill up a couple hundred miles before stopping so I wouldn't have to deal with leaking diesel.  I found the oem hose was cracked at the bend and routed incorrectly. It was a job getting it out of there, extend the super slide and, there is a little gull wing door just forward of drivers side front tire that opens up with removal of just 2 bolts and take the wheel well liner out. Pretty decent access at that point. The hose was difficult, suffering from "severe stenosis" Most older guys know what that is right? It was a job getting the ends off the tank nozzle and the fill nozzle ends, gentle, friendly persuasion (hammer and chisel) helped with this.
As I worked the old one out, I set the new one in the sun to warm it up and make it more flexible.  I found the old hose had an adel clamp mid route that was supporting, clamp up vs down from the mount stud. Thus the hose made a curve UP midway run, causing fuel to back up while filling. Going back in I lubed the insides where contact with metal nozzles happen,  and did a 180 with the clamp, clamp down vs up. Now the routing is correct. It shouldn't back up on filling and it shouldn't leak. I'll find out next run. Thanks for reading fellas, just wanted to add a little to the knowledge base.

I have the high temp lube ordered for the PAC valve, once it gets here I'll be taking the rear bed apart and lubing it which Ive been hearing most people never do. We'll see.

I can’t be absolutely certain since you have a different engine than ours;  but with the bedroom/wardrobe floor hatches open and me facing the rear of the coach, the Jacob’s brand exhaust brake is in the manifold, to my right on top of our CAT C9 engine.  It’s relatively easy to access.  There are several points that one should use the lube bottle on:

There’s also a video on YouTube -      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_wX98sHBpU

Admittedly, having been sidelined long and with poor memory I’m only postulating here, but you can have, engine running, a helper activate the dash switch while through the hatch you observe the unit’s action to see if it’s working as it should (watch where you put your fingers).  An engine speed beyond idle may be necessary.  There should be a solenoid nearby that routes air to the unit;  to test air and mechanicals you may be able to apply an external 12v to it as an alternative to a helper in the drivers seat.  I’m not sure what your reference to a two stage brake is regarding, as our switch is simply either on or off.  Others here with more recent experience may provide enlightenment.

As for your complaint of “intermittent“ operation, keep in mind that cruise control disengages if the exhaust brake activates, like it does if you depress the brake pedal.  The exhaust brake quits if the fuel pedal is depressed or if engine speed is too low.  A complete checkup would see that both the electrical and air sides of the pacbrake system are functional, as well as the mechanical lubrication side.

Hi Joel and thanks, I'm right there with you on the memory thing. The rigors of an older brain apparently. Mine has the Cummins ISL 400. My switch on the side console is a 3 position switch, center- off, fwd and back. As far as intermittency goes, the po had it wired to the brake light relay in the fwd electrical bay with a computer power cord with the ends cut off. It kind of worked sometimes. I just find it amazing the work around folks will go through to disable a perfectly good system, and do it with parts taken from a garbage can.

Im making a plan to follow yours and others advice and get in there to lube it and put it on a regular maintence schedule if I can remember.  :-\

Frank,

A picture of the damaged area would help.  Is it just cosmetic or is it a soft weak spot?  Is it just in the bottom of the slide or does it go to the floor on the inside.  Really need more info to help you properly.
