Title: inverter breaker tripping at night
Post by: Jason Worman on April 07, 2021, 05:21:37 PM
Hi all,

I have a weird thing happening, the breaker to our inverter trips periodically and only at night. It shuts off inverter but no other loss of power. It is completely random, can go weeks on end and suddenly it will trip. We have the Xantrex Freedom 458. I will reset breaker and we will be good for quite some time  Puzzled

Two things to check: Unplug battery temp sensor from inverter, if installed. A bad sensor can cause the inverter to do weird things. 2. Could be sign that you need to snug up a wire terminal on the AC side (shore power input side). Unplug from shore power, turn off the generator and snug up the AC terminals. Check the Load side AC terminals too.

Bill,

Thank you for the input, will try those two things and see what happens

Jason, Might be a good time to snug up the wire terminals on your main breaker panel too! Can't hurt, unless you forget to pull the shore power cord first!!

Jason, You may take inventory of everything that is plugged in on that circuit, random tablet, phone, blu-tooth charger and the like. Even those mini electric heaters stashed in a corner. It could also be the breaker itself. If they have tripped excessively, they start to lose their value. Intermittent issues can really be frustrating and a 30 year old coach can demand your attention. Soldier on.... Fred

One other place to check is where the breaker snaps on to the bus bar, mine had corroded or had been arcing and was causing a problem. I installed a new breaker and cleaned up the bus bar and that fixed my problem, after making sure NO electricity to the coach including the inverter. Safely.

Keith

Where is your bus bar located?

Hi all

Thank you again for the info, will take inventory of that is plugged in. Thr only thing that shuts off is the inverter itself. No lights, devices, heater or anything else lose power.

The main breaker box, with all power off, take the cover off and the circuit breakers are exposed. You can check the screws that hold the wires for tightness but to check the bus bar connection disconnect the wires then you should be able to pull the end of the circuit breaker without the wires out and that releases the breaker. The connection where the breaker snaps on to the bus bar is the location of my problem. Remember Check, Check, and check to make sure there is no voltage in the circuit breaker panel.
