Title: 2000 Beaver Marquis dash heater blower motor.
Post by: Jeremy Parrett on October 05, 2015, 04:43:38 AM
On the drive from Colorado Springs to Albuquerque   the dash heater blower motor on slow or medium speed caused the volt meter to sink to 12 volts.  On high speed the volts stayed at 13- 14 volts.
If I need a new motor, what make / model is it ?
The motor makes a grinding sound at slow speed.  Not good eh ?

Thanks to all the members who offered advice.  We are going to Toms RV Service in Albuquerque tomorrow to have the Dometic reefer fixed. It wont run on propane.
I will get them to check out the dash heater blower. I found the resistors under the front cap, drivers side.  The are fine, but look like a 60's design !!!

Mine froze up the same way. When I was @ Beaver Coach Sales, they replaced the motor, said it happens from time to time.  Henry

Jeremy,
Your 2000 Marquis has two dash HVAC blower motors. First, you need to determine which one is defective by unplugging them one at a time. It is a very simple replacement. The motors are AC Delco design, and they are available almost everywhere. You can take the part number from the motor and order one from Amazon or take the old motor to an automotive parts store to match it.

Jeremy,  Up under the front cap mounted to the firewall on the drivers side you will find 2 dedicated resister coils mounted near each other. These resister coils determine the slower speeds of the blower motors (drivers side & passenger side). The coils add more resistance and slow the motors down by decreasing the voltage going to the respective motor. If the motors are making a noise or chirping then replace them. Regards, Fred

Replace the resister coils or the blower motors? Are the motors near the coils?

Jeremy,
As Fred noted, the resistors are under the front cap. They are located on a vertical brace near the outboard (drivers) side and are each enclosed in a rectangular shield, since they get quite hot. That said, I think your problem is the fan motor itself since it is making a grinding sound.  Also, the resistors are used on the 2 medum speeds, not for low or high. As Gerald said, the fan motors are available at almost any auto parts store. I got  a replacement for one in our Marquis for about $30 at Auto Zone.

Before you do all that, if your blower motors are like mine in an '05 Patriot, there is a drawer on top of the exhaust area . There have been times when a pencil, leaf, credit card, etc. gets behind that drawer and quasi jams the motor. Not sure if yours is the same configuration but might be worth the effort to check the blower exhaust fins.

I too have had the fan blades hit debris in the plenum, and also skim slightly warped plastic housings, or as a result of loose mountings.  So it could be that as easily as bad motor bearings.  If it only "grinds" at certain speeds, it may be the fan, where momentum affects whether it's hitting anything.

We had a bad bearing in the curbside fan a year ago.  When we got the fan out I wondered how the squirrel cage stayed in the housing.  It was really loose and wobbly.  The fan squealed terribly, on all speeds but especially on high speed... so loud we could not hear the radio.

If you replace the "squirrel cage" fan blades, be sure to get the correct pitch. I didn't and spent a week trying to figure out why I wasn't getting any air through the vents......

Thanks to everyone for the good advice. I managed to remove the blower ( left  one was the problem)
It's a Canadian Unimotor # 11588. 12v A99.
The bearings are tough to turn and the plastic not nylon squirrel cage is broken.
I have a new motor from. 1997 Chevvy Suburban that has the same mounting plate but a deeper squirrel cage purchased at Advance Auto Parts.
Would it be ok to cut the back opening in the plenum about 1 inch wider to allow the new squirrel cage to protrude past the inner wall towards the radiator coil???
Then I can fit this blower motor.VDO PM149 12v.  I cannot change the squirrel cage as the old one is broken.

Jeremy,
Before you cut anything go back to the parts store and get a VDO PM 129. It was an exact replacement for the ones in my 2000 Marquis.

Hi Steve,
many thanks for the info.  I   returned  the VDO unit to Auto Zone for a  $59 refund.
O Reilley's had the  129 so I bought it for $32.
The squirrel cage is still too long.
I will repair my old squirrel cage with CG and install it on the new unit.

I had the same issue as Jeremy.  My 99 Marquis had a squealing passenger side blower motor.  It was labeled Unimotor 11582 12V B 00.  When I bought what was supposed to be the replacement for this, the blower wheel was much too deep.  Apparently, Beaver changed the blower motor setup in the Marquis at some point.  I was unable to find the correct part until I reached out to Unimotor and found a product specialist who went way above what I expected and found the correct part numbers for me.  My blower wheel for the passenger side is 5.51ā€ diameter and 2.71ā€ in depth per the manufacturers info.  The rotation is counter-clockwise as viewed from the end of the shaft.  Here are the part numbers which are Carquest/ Advanced Auto Parts numbers:

Part number 35384 is a counter-clockwise blower motor with the smaller wheel.  It does have a double electrical terminal instead of the single post on the original motor.  This is what I got and it runs like new now.

From what Iā€™m reading, the driver's side motor may have a clockwise rotation.  If this is the case, you have the option of the 35406 which has a double terminal and one vent hole, or the 35333 which has two vent holes and a single terminal.  The rep stated that the 35333 pushes slightly more air than the 35406.  Both of these have an identical blower wheel.

I highly recommend pulling out your existing motor first to see what you have, before ordering parts.  I have not personally verified what blower motor is installed on the driver's side.

   Preston,
You are correct, the drivers side is counter-clockwise. These motors do not have bearings just bronze bushings and they do slow down over time. Fred
