Title: Used mufflers
Post by: Jim Nichols on March 18, 2018, 12:22:12 AM
Truckers ask if I have a straight pipe and yes I do.  Now have a Airo-Turbo 5050XL. Maybe the XL stands for extra-crispy loud or louder. Anyway, in defense of not wanting to buy my bride hearing aids later in life I'm (we're) looking for a used original muffler that will fit any year C-9 CAT, specifically a 2005 Monterey. Seriously!

Jim,

As you know, we bought a little smaller rig.  It is plenty peppy with a Ford V10.  80 in Montana and it is hardly breathing.  Yet, it sounds anemic.  I'm looking, but don't know what to do.

Bill,

Anemic is the best for good mileage. I'm always stressed going 80 in the Monterey. You have a very complicated smog system to fool with. Well of coarse if you want to fool with the exhaust and don't mind yelling at each other over the sound it might be worth it. Natasha wears the hearing protection that you would use for a chainsaw going up hills and wears a microphone so I can understand her.

Jim, your muffler can be modified inside to reduce excess sound of the straight pipe concept.
The reasoning for the mufflers on Diesel engines in addition to sound reduction but to maintain
certain amount of back pressure on engine exhaust. The engine exhaust back pressure shows
up on your intake temperature running down the road. I have mention several times to members
after connecting Cat ET into the engine ECM about low intake temperature history engine running.

Unlike you big motorhome people, we get to sit with the mighty V10 between us.  It keeps us from having too much conversation!  You remember the days of bench seats where your girlfriend could cuddle up?  Now we define distracted driving as using a telephone.

Hey Jim If you are going  80 check the speed rating on your tires!

Our wheels, not tires, are stamped rated for 75.

I think I'm going to do what Dave suggested.

I saw two large mufflers lying along the interstate as we traveled from CA, to AZ, then to TX and AL in our travels back to MI this past month of March I cannot for the life of me remember on which interstate they were.
Is it possible to buy a new one for your C-9?

I don't think there will be much 'use' left in a 'used' muffler. But a good muffler shop should be able to solve your issue.

Re the question "can you buy a new muffler". I went to Donaldson muffler with the original part number for a 2005 Monterey cat c9 .  They said all they could do was give me a genuine Cat part number as a replacement. #2501179 is available from Cat for the paltry sum of $1400.
