So I got all new coach batteries and when I turn on charger it hums for a few seconds and stops humming and makes a clunk sound. Charging light stays solid at 12 volts, inverter light blinks and battery indicator stays solid red. I disconnected shore power, shut off 12v breakers and all breakers and let coach sit for several hours. Came back connected shore power and turned on 12v panel and 120v breakers. This time charger hummed longer but eventually made a clunk sound. Same result ie., charger solid green, inverter blinking, battery condition side red. I called Xantrex and they could not help. When I turn charger off, inverter blinks and battery condition goes from red to normal. Batteries all tested fine. No overtemp or overchargewarnings. Anyone had same problem. I miss the nice steady hum. Thanks

What is the battery voltage?
Did you measure at battery posts and/or terminal at Inverter?
Are you looking at the display on the Inverter - or the remote?
On the Inverter, is the RED LED light on for "Low battery (under 10.5V) or is it the "Overcharge" LED that is lit?

Mike,
I tested each individual battery with a voltage meter and each one tested at 12.5-12.6 volts. I tested the posts on the inverter and they tested at 13 volts. The solid red LED is on the remote and not on the actual inverter. On the inverter the charge LED is solid Green and inverter LED is blinking. The batteries are cold to touch as well as the inverter. The batteries are the wet cell type which I selected at set-up.

Which remote do you have (Link 1000, Link 2000, Freedom Basic, etc.). I was taking a quick look at the literature - but I don't see any remotes that have a "red LED Battery" status indicator.
Do you have one of the remotes listed under Accessories on this pdf. http://www.xantrex.com/documents/Inverter-Chargers/Freedom-458/Freedom%20458%20Datasheet.pdf

Jason, Mike,
It the Low Battery LED is not lit on the inverter itself but is lit on the remote, it would seem that the remote isn't sensing battery voltage. Since this occurred following a battery changeout, I'd check for either a wire not hooked to the batteries or a broken wire (both in battery bay).

I have the Link 1000. I read online about unplugging the remote and waiting several minutes. I did this and the LED lights on the remote under the charge setting blink Green and Orange. I looked un manual and could not find any info. I will check connections in battery bay.

The batteries charge fine with engine running, I shut off the charger for now, someone else suggested to test the battery fuse in the battery bay. It checked out ok with voltage meter in both sides of fuse.

Sorry this is so scattered I realized I cant turn charger on/off in the inverter itself, only the remote will turn it on/off

Jason,
to confirm - do you have the "Freedom 458-20" (current model line) or the "Freedom 20" (now discontinued). Is this the original Inverter/Charger? The LED status lights are a little different between the models.

Mike,
It was installed in June of 2006., also I realized the remote is the Freedom Basic Remote. The original was the Heart Inverter. I bet it is an older model. When I called Xantrex the tech guy thought the inverter was "stuck" and not fully cycling thorough. It's strange I can only turn on charger side with remote. Also with the charger off, the inverter side just blinks meaning it's in standby. My number is 541-707-7415. Thanks
