Title: Questions About Residential Refrigerator
Post by: Stan Simpson on June 04, 2019, 10:48:43 PM
We are researching a change-over from the Nevercold to a residential refrigerator. For those of you who have done this change, or have a coach that came equipped with a 'regular' household refrigerator, can you say what you do to keep food containers from sliding around on the glass shelves while in motion?

Thank you.

Stan, For glass shelves, try that rubber mat designed for cabinet shelves. If it will keep the dishes from crashing about, it'll sure keep the leftover potato salad in place. Camping world sells spring bars, gallon jug restraints, etc. Others as well (RV Upgrades)

Stan,
We haven't used anything in our Samsung and have only had a problem once after driving a very rutted and rough road. Since most reefers are positioned about amid-ship in the coach there isn't too much movement. Biggest issue IMHO is making sure the doors stay closed. We found best (and most economical) solution is bungie cords, one holding the reefer doors together and one across the freezer drawer (this one required mounting hooks in the wood frame on either side of the freezer drawer. Bill's idea is a good one too. We use those in our cabinets and may try them in reefer.

Stan, no problems with things moving around on us.  I guess we keep it so packed the items have no where to go.  We have the Samsung RF18.  It has served us well.  We went with a "Fridge Fixer" to keep the doors closed.  Real simple install.  Took 15 minutes max.  Current price is $39.99 plus shipping.

Good luck, Paul

Stan, We have a 4 door Samsung. I use plastic shelf bins. They keep things under control and in place. You decide what you are going to carry in the fridge and then decide where to keep it. Freddy Meyers, Fry's, Lowe's, etc. will have a storage section. The name Storage Binz has the largest selection. When I replace one with another, there is always another place in the coach for the bin.
Good luck!
Vicki

Stan as a side note Our coach came with the Whirlpool side by side and 4 extra 6V house Batteries.  We now have 4 x12V  D4 batteries.
This 12 yr old fridge works great and makes ice like crazy.  It only draws 13 amps on start up so not too bad and it is a bit deeper than most Samsung RV fridges I have seen.
Just a little food for thought.  Dont miss the Norcold or Dometic.

Hi Stan!
I use the rubber matting, that is meant for cabinets and drawers, on the glass shelves and the spring bars across the front of whatever I have in there. They work really good! I also use them across the inside of cabinets (bathroom, mostly) and at the bottom of the closet doors to keep them from sliding open during travel and slamming around! 😃 Enjoy tour new fridge!

We used the plastic storage bins from our replaced Norcold fridge. They work perfect to keep things contained while we are on the road. We have the Samsung RF-18 residential fridge.

Larry, On your refrig installation, did you remove the drawer under your fridge to make room for the Samsung.?Wife wants to keep the drawer under our Norcold, and I know its days are numbered.

Thanks!

Yes, the drawer did have to be removed and a floor had to be installed over the heat register to fit the Samsung into that spot. It worked out very well. My wife was also disappointed to lose the drawer but she feels the new fridge was worth it. Best of luck on your decision!

Thank you for all of the great replies. We purchased an RF-18 from Lowes, and they are going to hold delivery until we tell them where to deliver it. We are leaving for a Western trip on Monday. We couldn't get anyone to install it by Sunday, so we'll wait until we get back home in August. The one place we are negotiating with wants the old Norcold in partial trade for their labor, but they don't want to install the RF-18 until after Labor Day when their service department slows down.

Yes, we will lose the two drawers under the Norcold, but we aren't full-timers, so that space isn't crucial.

  Hey Stan,
I get the part about your Wife not wanting to give up the drawers under No-Cold refer. Our marquis had a U-line icemaker that quit 4 years ago and I never got around to fixing it. So after I installed the Samsung RF18 refer I decided to make my bride happy twice, I removed the U-line and built an 18" tall by 14" wide by 24" deep pot drawer. I installed 100 pound ball bearing drawer guides and installed the drawer. The 3 face fronts that came from the deleted drawers I resized and glued together to become the drawer front. I added a 10 pound "Southco" pull latch to secure and a travel pin inside the adjacent cabinet to trap the 80 pounds of cast iron skillets and assorted pots inside the new drawer.
   Blessings, Fred Brooks
