Technical Support / C9 Cat overheating problem
« Last post by Don Colapietro on November 07, 2024, 02:04:15 AM »
Hi Dave and Steve, finally made it home with minor heating issues. not a fun trip, but I finally located the problem with the high temp. Spent a lot of time and money before I found the cause. A friend with a hydraulic shop had me remove the spool valve on the fan motor that controls the pressure to the motor. Lo and behold, the movable spool had a groove in the tapered cone!!!  Polished it out in my drill press and the fan now roars on command from the wax valve. Hope this saves someone a lot of time and money. Don Colapietro

Technical Support / Re: Identify an Entry Door Awning

Don't know if this is of any help. But the entry awning on my 05 Marquis is as follows.

Carefree Part: VP050MB25WM
MANUFACTURE DATE : 05/12/04
DESCRIPTION :  FREEDM OTD/WA,050"4667,WHT/MTR

For a motor you might try Florida Automated Shades (https://www.floridaautomatedshade.com/ ). I was able to get a Somfy motor from them to replace dead motor in my Carefree bedroom awning earlier this year. Their support help seemed to be pretty good at knowing the various motors in Carefree awnings. And less than 1/2 price of what Carefree wanted - even if I could have found it.

i just added a Common Problems article: "Air Bag Suspension and Adjustment". I also re-arranged the site by categorizing the article list. It's located on the BAC club website under Technical, Common Problems. Take a look!
Also, THANKS to Eric Maclean for his inputs and review of the article.

The aqua hot reservoir tank is supposed to function as a expansion tank . The way the system works is the aqua hot boiler starts out full to the filler neck cold (ambient temp ) and the reservoir filled to the cold mark then when the boiler comes up to temperature (190* to 200*) the fluid in the boiler expands the radiator cap on the boiler has a valve built into it that maintains a pressure on the fuild in the boiler for each pound of pressure the boiling temperature of the fluid is increased by three degrees. At the when the pressure reaches the set pressure of the cap as the fluid expands the valve in the cap opens allowing fluid to move to the expansion reservoir where it is held .
Now when the boiler cools down and the fuild shrinks back to its original Volume the pressure in the tank goes away and it creates a vacuum in the boiler tank at this point a second valve built into the radiator cap opens allowing the fluid in the expansion tank to be sucked back into the boiler.

In theory this works great however if there are any leaks in the system ( ie  a cracked filler neck or leaking fitting somewhere ) the tank will suck air back in instead of boiler fluid as air is lighter which defeats the system any time the cap is removed the boiler tank should be topped up with fluid.

These rad caps valve springs get weak with age and according to aquahot should be replaced annually ( I'm not sure I agree with the annually part )
But it should be check occasionally or in this case replaced to restore the the function of the tank

The rad cap will have the pressure marked on the top you should be able to match it at any NAPA or O'Brien parts store

Caution don't remove the cap on a hot boiler as the pressure will spray hot fuild and you can be burnt badly

Caution the low fluid float switch is there to shut down the boiler if the tank gets low if this switch is by passed the system will run and if the fluid gets down low enough that the diesel combustion chamber is not in the fluid the chamber housing will over heat and crack allowing the fuild to leak into the chamber and exhaust.

Hope this helps
Eric

Thank you! We added the fluid we had - almost a gallon -  but it was Sunday so we couldn't buy more. The light went out and we do have hot water and the furnace is working. We didn't see any leaks but the fluid is not going in from the reservoir so we will continue to work on it. All of the suggestions have been extremely helpful - and we have great neighbors where we are staying. One that is in a Monaco and has some experience. Ginny and Ante

Technical Support / Re: Identify an Entry Door Awning

Neal - I am wondering if you were able to remove and/or dismantle your over-the-door awning.  After arriving in Yuma for the winter about 2 1/2 weeks ago, I decided to tear into my over-the-door awning because it has not operated at all for several years.  I have not been able to precisely identify the awning other than knowing it's a Carefree of Colorado unit.  Yesterday I spent a couple of hours getting the end cap off the motor and was able to successfully remove the awning completely from the coach.

The motor has to be completely removed from the end of the awning in order to allow the awning to extend.  Once extended about a foot or more, the three screws locking the awning into place on the coach can be removed.  Then the awning can be tilted up and slid off the front from the holding rail.

My awning motor appears to be a dead soldier but has no identifying name, model, or any identifying information.  My next step is to either repair the motor, if indeed repairable, or replace it.  My next stop will be to see "Old Bob" at CJ's RV Repair here in Yuma tomorrow.  I will take the awning and motor to him to see if he can repair or replace the motor and reinstall it.  If so, then I can slip the awning back in place, hook up the wires, apply liberal amounts of Lexel at the leak points,  and reinstall the three screws that hold it from sliding left or right, or lifting in the wind.

Anyone know where I can get a motor for it?  I understand it's a Fiamma motor.

BTY - Once you have spent a few hours trying to figure out how to get the awning extended, you will find it pretty easy to reinstall... I think!  There is one screw that must be removed and it's under the front flap that leads the awning out when it extends.  The problem is that screw is under that flap.  Well... a two-inch section of that flap can be removed by removing the screw that holds it in place.  You have to drive a wedge horizontally under the flap from its left side.  Then look in horizontally from the left side.  There you will see a Phillips head screw to remove.  Removing that screw will allow that two-inch piece of the flap to come off revealing the final screw that holds the motor cover on.

You can search older threads here for AquaHot or HydroHot (the smaller hydronic model) leaking issues.  A not uncommon leak is from a deteriorated filler neck atop the unit, and fixes are discussed.  Check for loose fluid around it.

But there are a number of outbound (hot) and inbound (cold return) hoses to and from exchangers, so unscrew exchanger escutcheons so you can see, and check hose connections.  Check the one in one of your bays. Unscrew the metal cover on the front of the AquaHot (it can be tricky) and check pump connections and the area around the drain valve.

Also it should be mentioned that the float switch in the tank can deteriorate and break, making the control board assume the fluid is low.  Newer switches aren’t as subject to breaking.  As I recall you may be able to jumper board contacts to bypass a faulty switch until repaired, but it’d have to be only temporary… you need the switch to protect operations in case of a real leak.

Good call on the AH - the low fluid level fault is on - I looked up a couple of you tubes to see how to add the coolant and when it is light tomorrow we will try that - and look for leeks. There were all sorts of ideas on the internet so hopefully we can get that taken care of. Thank you so much for answering all of these newbie questions. Such a learning process...Appreciate it all - Ginny and Ante

Ante, Here’s my 2 cents worth.
The Aqua Hot doesn’t run if there is a low battery fault so if your batteries ran down the AH  wouldn’t kick on.
The fresh water tank is in the plumbing bay but can also be seen on the passenger side where the ‘T’ shaped drain valve is.  It is next to the Aqua Hot in the large passenger side bay.  This gets only fresh water unless you are winterizing so no Aqua Hot fluid in the fresh tank….ever!
The Aqua Hot over flow tank is either in the fueling bay or in the bay with the aqua hot or in the engine compartment (like ours).  It is  about 1 gallon sized plastic container that says cold at the bottom and hot about 3/4 the way up.  The mixed boiler fluid goes in there and can be red or green/yellow depending on which was used before.  Don’t mix the two colors.  Use distilled water  or pre mixed  boiler fluid.
It sounds like your charging system needs looking at.
How old and what type batteries for house and for chassis?
On shore power with the inverter on and charger. On you should be able to read the batteries with a multi meter.  It sounds like they are only charging from the alternator which could mean a bad inverter or a bad relay in the rear run box.
