Title: Tire chain recommendations?

Lonne, I just checked and in CA, only the drive axle of a motorhome would be chained up. They say the inside dual (should) be chained (if possible). Steer and tag do not have to be chained. So I would carry one set for the outside drive axle tires to be safe. Doesn't Or also require chains to be carried (Nov to April)?

Lonne,
My understanding is that CA requires vehicles to carry chains or cables from 11/1 - 4/1 if they enter a "chain control area" regardless of snow condition. Good reason to either stay out of the state or in/near the desert in the winter time. :)

I was reading about this on another forum and the CA "chain rules" say both drive tires (inner and outer) need to be chained. Many responses warned that a loose chain will destroy a fiberglass fender and its best just not to travel in those "chain required" areas.

I ran Ca for years, chain up take'em off, chain up take'em off. Go out a get the cheapest set of single drive axle cable chains you can find and carry them just to show the boys at the chain control stop. A friend of mine got wrote up for not having a set for his semi flatbed and there wasn't even any snow anywhere.
Best advise is to always check the Cal Trans road condition site and don't go if they are talking snow.
On I-5, I-80 and I-15 if two snow flakes hit the pavement they will throw up the chain signs. Reason is the idiots can't drive in snow or ice and don't understand that you can't go 80 mph on snow.
And you only required to chain up the outside drive axle tires.

For many year I have always carried chains in the rig with no intention to ever use them, the law tells us we have to carry not use. IMHO

Maybe Spikes-Spider would be worth having as they look to be much easier to install than chains.

If they make them in 22.5 wheel size (they show a listing for wheel size 22 and 23 but the pics don't look like our tires). I only heard of these because they were mentioned in the CA info link above.
