Title: Smart Steering Wheel
Post by: Richard Muha on November 20, 2019, 09:50:40 PM
All functions work except the Hi-Lo for the windshield wipers.   Any thoughts?

There is a troubleshooting manual for the SmartWheel in the Members' Coach Assist section.

The SmartWheel model you have has an LED diagnostic light on the control module.

You can have someone activate the wipers and see if the LED light indicates the signal is reaching the Controller (the LED flashes appropriately). If the signal from the steering wheel wiper button is getting to the Controller, then you may have a faulty wiper motor, or wiring issue to the Wiper motor. The manual states the biggest source of problems is due to bad grounds.

If the signal is not getting to the Controller (the LED does not flash) then the Wiper button is bad, or the steering wheel clock spring is bad, or the wiring between the steering wheel and Controller is bad.

My SmartWheel is an older model, but I had a problem with the Cruise Control. it turned out to be a bad wire crimp in the connector that plugs into the Controller. So an easy test for this, is to give each wire a gentle tug. If one pulls out of the connector then you found your problem. Also, its not a bad idea to unplug the connectors and spray some electrical contact cleaner on them.

I still have this problem.  No light on dash.  Wipers do not come on nor do headlight flash and now cruise control won’t come on.

Where is this control box located on my 2008 beaver Marquis?

Richard,
In my 07 Contessa it's mounted on the front wall of the front electrical bay. Suspect the 08 has it in the same place.

I checked the electrical bay this morning and did not see that control box for the smart wheel.  See my photos.

Richard,
The 08 VIP control module is designed to be mounted inside the passenger compartment according to a note on the electrical diagram. The console left of the driver and behind the dash are 2 spots to look. If no joy there, it may be behind a panel in one of the overhead cabinets above the driver. The diagram is available in 2008 Contessa Wiring diagrams in Coach Assist. It's labeled VIP Smart Wheel.

I’ll check in the morning.  Thanks. Oh, Dave Atherton says hi.  I’m in Quartzsite.

On a 06 Marquis the control box is in the front bay drivers side.

Richard,
I think saw a post from Larry Diedrick noting that on an 08 the smart wheel is controlled by the chassis controller. Thus there is no separate VP controller.
