Title: Wet Front Axle
Post by: Jerry Pattison on May 27, 2018, 12:51:26 AM
I have a 1998 Marquis.  The "sight glass" area of the front hub is now opaque, and I  cannot see the level of the lubricant.  How can I assure that I have at least a minimum level of lube?  And, what kind of lubricant is in there?

Jerry, there is a rubber plug in the center of the oil hub. Remove the plug and you can see the level of the oil. I believe the oil is 75-90. Some use synthetic oil for longer service. also here is a link that may help you.http://beaveramb.org/forum/index.php/topic,1348.msg9005.html#msg9005

Jerry
Pull the rubber plug and insert your finger.  The gear oil should be about 1/8 inch below the lip of the opening.

Jerry,

It is probably a Stemco hub.  You can replace the "sight glass".  (Stemco 359-5995 Hub Cap Window Kit)

Truck dealers, truck parts stores or Amazon!  https://smile.amazon.com/Stemco-359-5995-Hub-Cap-Window/dp/B002D407Z4/ref=smi_www_rco2_go_smi_g1405964225?_encoding=UTF8&%2AVersion%2A=1&%2Aentries%2A=0&ie=UTF8

The cap has a drain plug.  Drive until the plug is at the bottom.  Drain the oil.  Replace the window.  Put the oil back in or use new oil.
