Title: Replacing King Size mattress
Post by: Bob Jae on February 02, 2016, 05:27:55 PM
We have a 2006 Monterey and would like to replace the mattress with a sleep number bed.  The issue is finding the right size.  When I measure between the night stands there is only 70" of space.  The current mattress fits snuggly into that space.  I wonder if it was custom made.  Wondering if anyone has fit a sleep number into the Monterey?  If so were you able to fit the compressor under the platform out of the way of the moving slide mechanism.  Sleep Number does make a 72" wide mattress.

Bob,

We had to order a special Temperpedic mattress when we replaced ours.  Not only was the width narrower, the length was shorter.  Measure both.  We couldn't find a Sleep-Number that would fit or coach.

Bob,
We put a queen Sleep Number in our 01 Contessa and have king Sleep Number in our 07 Contessa Bayshore, which  is spec'ed with a king mattress (probably the same size as your 06). Both fit with no real problems. The construction of the Sleep Number perimeter pieces is a foam rubber material so it will accommodate the 2" lack of width  with no real problem.
There is room under the bed for the compressor with  no issues. On the 01 the night stand outlets were not wired to the inverter output so I had to add an outlet but didn't have that problem with the 07.
If you've not owned a Sleep Number, IMHO the key to comfort is the pad on top of the mattress. We found good quality memory foam suited our needs.

When in Quartzsite two years ago we bought a new King mattress.  It is thicker at 14", a couple inches thicker than the mattress it replaced, and it has several layers made from varying types of materials.  The top layer is a memory foam material with an egg-carton look.  This mattress is the most comfortable one I have ever slept on, and my house mattress is a nice warm waterbed.  I remember one alteration that had to be made, that being it had to be altered to be 3" shorter so that when the slide was retracted the mattress would not press on the drawers too hard.  Even at 3" shorter it still presses on the drawers, but the vendor seemed to know from experience that the mattress was too long for motorhomes and had to be altered to allow the slide to fully retract.

It was expensive at about $1,300 including pillows, but Leslie gets pretty much what she wants.  We have that type of arrangement.  Don't most of us?

David,
Agree with everything you noted. However, the egg-crate foam can and will wear out after a number of years of use. (Process is slow and you don't notice it until you start having trouble getting comfortable). We've had one in our stick house for years and that occurred. I doubt this would be an issue in a coach unless you are full timers though. I am a real fan of them.

We have a Queen short radius in our 2001 Contessa and love it!

Bob,
I just measured our king bed area. It also is 70" at the night stands and we've had no problems with the King Sleep number. If you install one, you may want to use a surge protector for the compressor. I lost the compressor in the Contessa and Sleep Number recommended installing a surge protector. I got mine at Home Depot and haven't had any problems since.

Thanks Steve especially for taking the time to measure.  Camping world has them on sale and free shipping so the timing is perfect.  We had put one in our Holiday Rambler and really miss it.  Thanks again.

As I recall when we had to replace ours in 2008 Contessa and talked to Sleep Number they said it was a special one for RV,s.  You might check direct with them.

We had our king size go flat on one side so we checked and for that half was $600.00 so we unziped and took both out and went to Costco and bought 2 king memory foam toppers which are 4 inches each and then a king 2 inch topper ----cut them to fit and it is just as good or better than our temrerpedic at home Cost less than $200.00

Bought ours at Camping World. RV King is what you are looking for. Online Camping World was cheaper than their in store price, so we asked if they would match it, and of course they would. Wireless remote with the pump under the platform. The plug under there was for the engine block heater.  It is not tied to the inverter so you must remember if heading to high elevations to lower the pressure with either shore power or gen.
