Title: fault codes
Post by: Greg Ross on August 08, 2017, 12:02:29 PM
We are on the Maritines Ralley and I have a check engine light and a fault code of SPN 101 and FMI 18, does anyone know to read these codes or know where I can find a list of the codes.
Thanks

(This one says SPF 111 & FMI 18 means low coolant level.)

I used these search criteria on Google - "Caterpillar fault code of SPN 101 and FMI 18"

Greg, I have your engine codes  breakout for your Cat C-9 425 h.p. Your engine is setup
regeneration system. Will post them tomorrow on forum, still on road returning to
Quartzsite from Phoenix. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

Thanks for all the info on the Fault Codes, it seems the codes are a bad connection as pot holes in Newfoundland can turn the Check Engine Light on and off.

Or perhaps marginally low coolant in the surge tank, sloshing sometimes below the sensor's level?

Greg, Using diagnostic equipment ( Cat ET and Cummins Insite ) first thing that pops up
on diagnostic troubleshooting is what called an event code. Than I go over to see how many
occurance or count that has happen starting at the first and last occurrence. When there is
high count in short time frame and sometimes timer maxes out on sensor or other electronic
equipment. In most cases dirty or loose connection to sensor there is nothing wrong with the
part in question. Today many many failure are blamed to the electrical component and part
is changed out where in fact there nothing wrong with the part, and again frayed wire, loose
and or dirty connection. Dave atherton Retired Cat Mechanic
