Title: Drive axle brakes
Post by: Jeremy Parrett on December 27, 2010, 04:22:43 PM
I am in need of information on servicing the rear drive wheel brake caliper, rail and guide pins . I believe I have the Arvirmeritor axle and issues arise if this service is not done annualy. Is this service something I can do ?   Thanks,Jeremy

Jeremy,
Servicing the rear brakes is the same as servicing the front brakes. You can service (lubricate) the brakes yourself if you have the proper tools and grease (special grease required) with average mechanical ability. I have a 2000 Marquis and I do all of my own brake maintenance.

The calipers should be lubricated 2 or 3 times in the life of the brake pads. Where the slide pins will need to be checked, depending on operating conditions, maybe once or less in the life of the pads. However lining thickness should be checked on a regular basis to keep track of their wear pattern and to know when they will need to be replaced. You should also check the rotors for cracks when the pads are replaced. Some surface heat cracks are normal, but deep or open cracks will require replacement.

Caliper lubrication and lining wear checks can be preformed without removing the wheels, but pad replacement and slide pin lubrication will require wheel removal.

If you would like me to email you a pdf file on maintenance for your brakes just email me personally and I will send it to you, or I can give it to you personally if you are going to be at Indio or Quartzsite. I also have the Meritor part numbers for the pads and rotors.

Jeremy,
You have Arvin Meritor Brakes.  You must go to their web site, and down load their Maintenance Manual 4m for ADM Series Air Disc Brakes. Read and understand Lube and Adjustment and the section on Auto Slack Adjusters, on how to release them.  It is very important to follow them exactly.  You will need a 20 ton jack and proper blocking, and a way torque lug nuts to 600 lb. Also, I have found ABS Modulator Valves not always releasing all the way.
