Title: Adding 50 Amp power box at home
Post by: Ted Couch on July 12, 2022, 06:46:31 PM
We just built a new house and have decided we need a 50 Amp box so we can provide power for our motorhome when we have guests staying for a few days. Are there any suggestions as to where and how to mount the power box/plug in? Motorhome is right next to the house on RV pad.

    Ted,
How far away is the house circuit breaker box from the new pedestal or wall mounted 50-amp receptacle? Fred

Suggest you mount a weatherproof box on outside close as feasible to RV. If not close to breaker box, install a box that will accommodate both the 50A outlet and a 50A breaker. Will save you many steps.

We had an outdoor receptacle box installed on the outside of the garage out of sight from the street.  It has one 50 amp, one 30 amp, and two 110 plugs.  That way we are covered for a smaller RV with 30 amp and for Leslie to run her leaf blower on the West end of the backyard.

If you simply want to supply for guests and maybe one if any air conditioner, you don’t need to go as far as 50 amp.  When our house was built I had a simple 30 added to the side patio/RV pad area on the house.  It’s done the job and a plain 15/30 adapter makes it handy for other purposes.  It’s on its own breaker in the Main in the garage, as is the 30a welder.

If you expect, on the other hand, guests staying out there on very hot summer nights where 2 AC’s would keep them more comfortable, then spend the extra bucks on the extra service (240v?).

I ran a 100 foot #6/3 cable (buried) from my house to the pedestal next to our RV shelter. Had to order the cable on line but bought the pedestal and breakers at Lowe’s. The coach is fully powered sitting under its shelter. If you are handy, you can do this yourself as I did. You can also check it out on YouTube which is very helpful. Just make sure your circuit box can support it and you have room for an additional 50 amp breaker.
