Title: A/R Numbers
Post by: Al Prust on January 22, 2016, 10:08:14 PM
What is an A/R number, and where would I look on my 1991 Contessa, VIN number 46GED1513M1051438, to find it?

Al,
I am not familiar with the term A/R number. In what context is it used?

Maybe area/radius ratio for a turbo housing?

If you have a 3208 Cat It might mean arrangement number, that would be on the engine.  If not I have no clue.

Who is asking you for an A/R number?  Ask them/him/her what it means.

                Hi Guys,

It refers to the build sheet that Caterpillar documented when they assembled the engine. Contact Dave Atherton for more details. Regards Fred

Good morning, the term A/R number is a build of engines, transmissions etc. with Caterpillar
equipment. It use to be stamped on all the engine metal ID Tags. Than things were changed
with engine ID. with just a stick on tag with engine S/N number and same number is stamped
on engine block. The engine s/n and a/r number will always get your build of your engine correct
part made for that s/n build. ( just using engine s/n for some main parts, there may be 7 or
8 part made for engine s/n  to choose from and all will fit in different ways.)
For Beaver members I have provided many with the build date of there engines , information
and the A/R number, many times to correctly answer post on engine problems,  I always ask
what is your engine s/n number. This way I can provide correct information and part numbers
pertaining problem. To many answers again that I provide tech support many answers will
depend on what the engine S/N number. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

Thanks Dave and Fred for the info.  Although I've owned my 1991 Beaver Contessa 36 & 1/2 foot motorhome with the Coronet floor plan since Feb 2000 - bought it thru Scott Dyson at Destinations RV - and have only had CAT engine shops service the 250 hp, 3116 turbocharged engine. I only heard about an A/R number in the last month or so, and I'm not sure where I did so.  I've been doing the rving thing since 1983 and read everything I come across concerning rving in general and motorhomes in particular, so I probably read about it in a magazine maintenance forum from a maintenance tech providing an answer to a letter.

Al Prust, what you have 3116 is the entry along with the 3126 both mechanical engines.
This is Caterpillar entry into electronic engines with 3126, the heui injection system.
Note: with the 3116 mechanical engine requires special tooling to set injectors and valves
and fuel rack fuel timing. The A/R number is located on engine data tag on valve cover along
with injector fuel setting and rack setting, intake & exhaust valve settings info on tag.
If you have problems, I have all the special tooling for this 3116 engine.
