Title: Swap Winegard Trav'ler SHAW for Dish
Post by: Gene Obie on January 15, 2020, 07:35:59 AM
I recently purchase an RV from Canada. It came with SHAW Trav'ler and evidently there's no conversion available from Winegard to go between SHAW and Dish. I've been told one option is to swap out entire upper assembly (turret+reflector+LNB/arm) at the rooftop turret for a Dish system if I can find a Canadian in the similar situation. We would also swap out inside controller and you get my SHAW rooftop GPS unit. Any takers or anyone with experience doing this?

Thanks

I am not at all familiar with SHAW but i did swap out a Direct TV unit for Dish. They did change out the turret+reflector+LNB/arm as you stated.  They had to drill an extra hole in the roof as the cables were different and fish them to the new controller.  I had the work done by an RV outfit in Casa Grande, AZ last winter. Wasn't cheep but worth not putting up with Direct TV.

Why not use this as an excuse for a portable so you can park the rig under a tree sometimes?  Aren't the Dish/Winegard Playmakers are around $300.

If you go with the Winegard SK-1000 for Dish you can use the Dish Hopper 3 and wireless Joey's in your coach. With the new SK-1000 you don't have to have another switch on the roof. I run the Hopper 3 and wireless Joey's and it works great, I use the base unit from the house just put in the coach when we go.
One thing the Hopper 3 will not work with any of the carry out units, that's a drawback if you are in trees a lot.

Lee, I already have a DISH, but the motor has died. When I get the new one, will I be able to install a TV anywhere and use it wire-lessly if I have the Joey thingy for a receiver?

Stan,, If you get the Winegard 1000 that will work with the Hopper 3 which I have works with the wireless Joey's. I'm not sure which Hoppers can use the wireless Joey's. I have the old version of Winegard 1000 and had to get a switch and power supply so it would work with the Hopper 3.
Call up Dish and they will be able to inform you on what works with what, that is if you get the right person.

The switch is called a DPH-42 and you can get it from Dish Depot. Call Mark Schultz 239-936-3474. It is necessary to adapt the Trav'ler 1000 to the Hopper 3 and use all the features. Hope this helps, Fred

Fred, I was told that with the new Winegard SK-1000 Traveler you would not need the DPH 42 switch to connect it to a Hopper 3 receiver. but I just read on the Dish site that it was not compatible with the Hopper 3. When I put my Hopper 3 in the Beaver they said it would not work and you could not run a Hopper 3 in a rv, well guess what it works just fine.

Lee, I think the latest generation LNB from Winegard will do what you say, I was told by Mark the earlier Trav'ler had to have it to use it's features. I was told also the farther east you travel it will become an issue. I'll call DishDepot for a better explanation. Fred

I talked to Mark @ Dishdepot and he states if you purchased a Trav'ler 1000 for Dish network and it was manufactured in 2019 you will NOT need a DPH-42 powered switch. He states those units came with a hybrid LNB and will work with a Hopper 3. If you are doing the Directv to Dish conversion you may need to inquire as to whether the LNB is a hybrid type. If you purchased a used SK-1000 from 2012 thru 2018 and intend to use a Hopper 3 you will need a DPH-42. Hope this helps, Fred

Fred, That is exactly what Dish told me, and mine is 2013 so I had to get and install the switch. The first one I installed took a hike after about a month or two and had to replace it.

   Hey Lee,
Not sure why you are having an issue with the powered DPH-42. I have not heard of any failures until now. Perhaps a hybrid LNB may be an option. Let me know how it works out. Blessings, Fred

Fred,  It was just a failure in the DPH 42 switch itself, it was supposed to be warrantied but we were on the road last year and I didn't bother with it, the new one has worked fine, no problems.
