Title: exercising Onan generator

Is it necessary to unhook the shore power before starting my Onan 7.5 diesel generator when exercising it?

Don,
No, it is not necessary to unhook from shore power to exercise your generator. Your transfer switch is designed as a generator priority device. So, if it detects power from both sources at the same time, it gives the generator priority and connects the coach to only the generator and disconnects all shore power from the coach.
