I have the 06 thunder and have been thinking about doing the MCD shades for a few year, turns out this is the year. I have set up a time with Joy at MCD and will take some photos of the "after", you all know what the "before" looks like.
Sounds like a $2000. deal for the front and sides.

I think you will like them. I did three blackout shades in the bedroom myself, took about 30 minutes mine were easy. I would not do motorized ones myself.
Look forward to seeing your completed project.

Good for you. We enjoy ours very much. One thing to think of is to make sure the electric switches which now operate your sun shades are not cut out when the key is turned on. You want to be able to adjust both the day and the night shade while driving. The driver's side shade will probably have to be on a remote control. We also needed some shade support when the shades went down because of the hump for the driver's side instrument panel. Good luck and happy installation. We not only enjoy the front and the side shades but Vicki is mad that we didn't do it for the whole coach a lot sooner.

Jerry, your going to love them. on our last coach we replaced all of them except the front. on this 06 thunder I replaced all of them again except the front. but after looking at the front project i'm going to do them also. your current switches for your sunshades work fine for the front as they are powered up all the time. one more thing to think about is powering your sunshade on your drivers window. its really convenient to be able to adjust it on the fly rather than reaching up to grab it. Good luck!

Thanks everyone some good stuff to review with the tech. Bob I will look at the black out option
-
Jerry, have you got your front mcd's installed yet?
Jim

Yes we did the cockpit windows I do like them very much, here is a photo
-
sorry here is the old cockpit photo
-
Jerry, I take it they made a cover for the A pillar for the front shade to glide on?
Jim

Looks very nice Jerry. We are planning on doing our front shades.
Dick & Donna from Walla Walla.
-
Jim this was not needed they did cut back the front edge about 1/2" to allow the front shade to glide on the face of each panel
-
I also am thinking about front MCD shades. Did you use two shades and how did thy handle the removal and installation regarded the recessed boxes for the old ones? Did you use two or three on the front?
We were actually talking with Jim Sizemore about shades for our 2000 PT and than we bought the Marquis which had already been converted on most window...the ones with the previous powered roman shade. However the fronts are still the original powered units.
We will keep our curtain for the time being since I don't mind the manual on the drivers side.

Jerry would I be pushing it to ask for a close up of the your left front corner where the 2 shade come together and where the trimmed that little bit off. Thanks!

Dick I think you can get the mcd product from RV outfitter located in Bend, I think they will do just as well on the install as the folks in McKinney. I decided to use the factory because it was on the way to a rally. Actually the install is very simple on our 06 model. I actually removed all of the old and did the switch wire set up myself to keep the cost down.
If I was doing it over I would have just placed the order and would have done the total install myself.

Jerry, Jim,
I have been considering them also, usually after being in fhe coach for a while. As I assume your coach front windows are essentially the same as mine when you say by cutting back 1/2 inch, do you mean the shade so it stays bhind the pillar? Just wondering how it handles the curve. So is one of the power visor switches used for daytime and the other for night shade?
Did you have get the driver window in power and if so how was it powered? What did you use on the door?
Looks like a nice install.

Jeff they did remove and notch the top corner of each post panel they also remove 1/2" from the front edge. the shade is about 1"longer then the panels so the shade passes by the front edge.
-
Jeff here is a photo with the day shade down
-
;Jerry, did they only use one shade?? Looks pretty nifty if they did and the shade just slides right down the edges rather than hanging straight down. I'm I seeing this correctly?
-
Jerry,
Looks like a nice flush fit. I see on the MCD website they have "platinum" and "gold" versions. I guess I am skimming it too fast as I don't see a big difference. Which type did you install?
They say about 4-5 days; is that how long it took for you?

Jeff we did use the platinum this is a better product and add's a slight cost. I did the wiring myself before the install and used just one of the dash switches(the passenger) this one is only working with the key on, so we have the sun screen on this switch and can use the MCD screen as a sun shade as we drive.
The night shade I used the original curtain switch this work's with the key off and seemed to be the best choice since we already use this switch for this purpose

Jerry, Thanks for the pic. I must be having a case of the dumbs but even though we have the same yr and model coach there is no way I can see that I have enough of that A pillar for mine to ride on. also were you there when they did the install and did you watch them remove the A pillar cover? I have no screws on the cover at all. it appears you need to remove the inside drivers window frame to get it off? any thoughts on that? Thanks!

Jim:
When I had mine done, the new shades ride down the front surface a new A Pillar, made to fit. It isn't the same shape as the original, it has a surface parallel to the plane of the shades, for the ride, and at right angles to that, the surface you see. It has one screw at the top and one at the bottom to hold it in place and is covered with a vinyl material very close in colour to your original.
-
Thanks Keith, that sounds like a plan. Good project when we get settled in Fl. Our last coach had about an inch and a half of surface on the A pillar cover and it made it real easy. Thanks again!

on the 06 thunder the passenger side A pillar panel has only one screw that shows the other 2 screw are behind the door frame panel.
on the drivers side our 06 has just 2 screws
The original panels did need a notch for the shades and they cut the front edge back about 1/2" the shades ride on the front edge.
Very simple job I plan to improve the project a bit on my return to seattle . I plan to fill in on the back side of the panels to fill the gaps
I think the job done by MCD was just OK and could have been finished better. I will do the correct job at home.
I felt a little rushed at mcd THEY HAD A LINE UP in the parking area with just one tech doing all the work. If doing the job again I would have just bought the product and have done the install myself.

Jerry, believe or not ours has no screws on the drivers side it appears the cover is held on by the inner window frame. oh well nothing is simple! lol Thanks!
