Title: Battery boost coil not working
Post by: Lyle Johnson on September 28, 2014, 11:34:05 PM
2000 Beaver Marquis
Battery boost not working
White-Rodgers coil.

The coil seems to be not working...do I need to get one similar or could I get by with a smaller 80 amp relay?

Lyle,
Are you referring to the solenoid in the battery compartment that jumps coach to chassis batteries when needed? If so, I would not go with any solenoid with a smaller amp rating than the original.

Lyle,
There is a circuit breaker in the electrical bay (beneath driver) that drives the subject solenoid. Be sure it is functioning before replacing the large solenoid.

Lyle,
Most of the boost solenoids that were used on the SMC era coaches stop functioning because of corrosion on the contacts. If you feel the solenoid click when someone activates the switch, you can usually repair it by drilling out the rivets that hold on the top and cleaning the contacts, then reassemble it with small bolts.

If you replace it with a 80 amp solenoid, it will probably not last vey long if it is used very many times as a boost solenoid. When you use it to start the engine from the coach batteries, it will have to carry up to 400 amps, and that will burn up a 80 amp solenoid.

Of the two battery posts on the top, one is bent over some and plastic is cracked around post...
There is no click sound audible when boost switch pressed down...

Also, replaced the other solenoid last year...works fine...thanks Steve.
Seeing as it looks fried...may take rivets out in the morning and have a look...thanks Gerald
