Title: Are These Gauges Readings Normal???
Post by: Jay Savelle on November 12, 2015, 01:04:24 AM
Hello & Greetings from my DW and me!!

We are brand new to this forum, and the first time owners of a Beaver motorhome!
We just purchased a 2006 Beaver Monterey Montclair IV, 41ft, CAT C-9 (400hp).

Can someone please advise me if these gauges show normal readings while traveling approx. 65 mph after about 3 hours on the road? Since the gauges have no numbers on them, I am not sure what "normal" readings should be for each gauge.

To me they seemed high, but no warning lights came on the dash.

Thank you all in advance for your help and knowledge with this situation!

Does your coach have the Aladdin system and if so what temps is it showing? The dash gauges are notoriously not very accurate. My dash temp gauge reads about a 1/4 when running at 186 by the Aladdin screen, trans temp gauge hardly moves.

Lee, I find doing Diagnostic's and ECM readouts with Cat ET, there is a different
value than with alladin or sliver leaf and Cat ECM in many cases. I my case I use
Cat ECM information and ECM clock for troubleshooting. Dave Atherton Retired

Hello, Jay. I just made the trip from MI. to AZ. in nearly the same coach as yours, only a year older, mine is an '05. I can't tell you about the trans gauge, because I took it out and installed a Pyrometer, because the tranny gauge didn't seem to work anyway. The water temp gauge, didn't read as high as yours, but I kept an eye on the Aladdin system. The highest I saw on the Aladdin, was 193. I did have a problem climbing the hill out of Albuquerque, she blew the intake hose, between the down pipe and the Charge Air Cooler. After finding the problem, 3-4 inch hose clamps fixed it and we finished the trip unobstructed. BTW, I really like my Beaver!

Yes, I do have the Aladin, but I didn't know I could use it till after my initial trip...

What would Aladin show as a "Normal" temp for the Transmission and Water temp? At what temp would be too high?

Thanks

Jay, I have the same model, year, and make.  On the Aladen I'm running 202 / 210 degrees F.Gauges show just half, both engine and transmission.  We are new members also.  Dale Soule' 775 376 8672

Jay,

Mine runs 186 to 195 water temp and the trans is usually around 160 or 170, on a long grade in hot weather I have got the water temp over 205 at that point shift down and it will drop back some.

The OEM (CAT) thermostat in my 400HP C9 is set to begin opening at 187-192F and is fully open at 208F. (Thx to D. Atherton for the info). My coach runs at 206 on the flats and will get as high at 215-220F when climbing mtn grades in the summer (while keeping RPMs up).
