Stranded

My 2006 Monterey has lost power to climb the hills and black smoke coming out. Had to be towed to Brookings Oregon. Tried to "Ask Dave" but the link wouldn't work. Any ideas what is wrong and suggestions where to have it fixed?  I have someone in Brookings that said they could look at it next week?

Kevin
Did the lose of power happen suddenly or over a period of time .
If suddenly first thing to check is turbo Intercooler pipes and hoses and the intercooler as well for leaks
A turbo boost leak will cause significant power lose and black smoke as the engine struggles to get enough air to burn the fuel delivered.

Check the steel pipe running to the intercooler from the turbo pay special attention to the connecting hoses  at the turbo output and the intercooler inlet if a clamp has rusted and broke the hoses will blow off  or leak under pressure netting zero boost .
On my coach the pipe from the turbo had worn a whole in it on the exhaust hanger bracket leaving a one inch square hole in the pipe and no power.

Was your lack of power accompanied by a check engine light if so do you have a way to retrieve codes.
Most lower lose problems are the result of one of three things
1) lose of proper fuel delivery
2) lose of turbo boost or air delivery ( also check your air filter )
3) a computer fault code or engine dreate caused by a computer fault code ( low oil pressure, low coolant, over heating  are some of the things which will cause the computer to go into engine protection mode and create power)

Check turbo hoses first
Hope this helps

Eric, thanks for you response to Kevin and your input on problem. I have been with Kevin on the
Phone and feel we are going into another direction and to a common problem with Heui injection
low power and black smoke. Yes you are correct with your thoughts but we are going first with
injector electrical connection that kills correct voltage to injector via return engine oil. This is a
common problem with the Heui injection system over time. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

Working with Dave on fixing my motor problems. Does anyone know how to access fault codes on my 2006 Monterey?

This method is from my owners manual for my '05 Patriot Thunder. It may be the same for your Coach - but I don't know for sure.
I also use the Scan Gauge D for monitoring the engine, and it also displays codes. If you don't have one, you may want to consider getting one. It's cheap at around $150.

This is from my C9 manual, and together with Mike’s post should serve you well:
Joel

There are several pages of flash codes.  Let me know and I can look up what you get, or I’d guess you can check CAT’s site and drill to them.  There is a diagnostics port for the engine and one for the tranny under the removable panel in the dash top in front of the steering wheel, and ports in the battery bay.  Qualified CAT technicians can access ECM fault from either location.

Joel, thanks for your assist with flash codes. What Keith came up after several times checking and rechecking the flash codes would be flash code of 63. The only problem is that not related to his present problem and his information could not find flash code 63 there was a 62 and a 64. I pulled
Flash code off my caterpillar sis problem. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

You’re right Dave, I don’t see a code 63 in my book.

My CAT troubleshooting manual (C7 and C9) lists "flash" codes. Perhaps this is what you're looking for.

'....My 2006 Monterey has lost power to climb the hills..."

Our '04 Montery with a ICS 350 Cummins did that twice.   New fuel filters fixed it.
