Stretched fabric on Girard awning
« on: July 18, 2011, 12:24:27 PM »
Hello!
We have a '98 Beaver Patriot with a Girard awning.  The fabric at the front of the awning is stretched so does not allow the awning to close tightly in that area.  All the fabric, though original, is in good condition w/ no problems other than this.  I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to rectify it, short of having the fabric replaced?  Something (duct tape perhaps?) strategicly placed at the back of the roller to tighten it up?
 I would appreciate any feedback!
Thank you!

Keith,

Believe it or not the duct tape is exactly what Girard had me use to repair the same issue with my awning.

Just manually roll out all the way and place about 7 pieces stacked about 6 inches long on the areas that are not retracting completely and install.  Works great!

Thank you Tom/Pam,
We did just that this afternoon and it worked great to tighten up the fabric.  Unfortunately, it is still not closing tightly enough.  We will follow the directions in the book for that tomorrow and then, I think, success!
Thank you again!

Keith,

Please be alert when adjusting the awning with an allen wrench.  I put the awning out about 6 inches to adjust mine.  The wind came up, and brought the awning in.  My hand was caught in the awning.  Uae a 6 inch long allen wrench, or put the awning out farther than 6 inches.

Thanks Larry for that bit.  The manual does say 6 inches and that could be hard on the hands.  FYI, for those reading this, our manual describes the location of the allen screws that adjust the ins and outs of the awning.  After much fiddleing with it I found that it was backwards in the manual.  Thus I had my hand in the awning for a much longer time.  Glad no wind came up!
