1996 Patriot 3126b serpentine belt replacement
« on: September 22, 2021, 12:22:33 PM »
What’s the right sequence of disassemble to get the serpentine belt off and new back on.  The fan hub that runs the hydraulic side radiator fan and probably more is mounted to both the engine and the frame here.  Looks like there are a couple disconnect points that could be used to do this …just wondering what folks have done and or what’s the best approach to tackle this job….maybe I am missing something that makes this easier than it looks.

Thanks

Unbolt the pump from the mounting bracket and slide it straight back towards the rear bumper this should give you enough room to change the belt.

While your there check the pump coupler insert for ware and also for ware or corrosion of the couplers metal parts they tend to rt away
It is also very important to correctly align the coupler when reinstalling the pump
And you might want to do the water pump belt at the same time while you are in there

Serpentine belt # NAPA 25-080700
Water pump belt #CAT 036-6775
Coupler insert #MAGNALOY M570H5
Coupler engine side # MAGNALOY M500-301-20042
Coupler pump side # MAGNALOY M500-810008SRC

Hope this helps

Thanks,  to confirm you mean the remove the 4 bolts hold the pump to the frame and slide the pump toward rear of MH, opening a gap near the coupler?

Both belts look real good from a wear perspective, except that debris seems to gotten in between the belt and a pull and have damaged some of the ‘v’s in the serpentine so since I had it apart to do the timing cover gasket/seal.  I thought now that I know about it I could not put it back together with that belt.  Even tho it might run 30k more miles , there is the chance it won’t.

Thank you for the #s was going to looking for those also.
Appreciative

That's what I meant
I think there is a write up on the coupler alignment in the old coach assist library.( Under miscellaneous diagrams and fixes)

Good news got belt replaced, bad news is coupler is in need of replacement.  The engine side is broken 3 teeth and the pump side is worn pretty bad, although not broken.
I found the company Magnaloy online.  It’s a 500+ replacement…..per their website….  are there alternatives?.  I would be hard pressed to trust a used one, unless it looked really really good…. But also these were set up in the mid 90’s so maybe a better alternative exists now days.

Have a great weekend , thank you.

The numbers I gave you in the earlier post were the magnaloy numbers for coupler parts .
I think your stuck as i was and have to buy tem from magnaloy.
The engine side coupler is a special casting and drilled to bolt directly to the 3126 harmonic balancer.

When I did mine the bolts which hold the coupler to the engine ( recessed Allen headed cap screws) ad there heads striped out so I had to drill the heads off to get the coupler off.

WARNING the coupler parts are made of magnesium so don't use a torch on the coupler or the bolts as magnesium burns and is very hard to put out.

Hope this helps

I replaced mine in 2011.  Magnaloy recommended an "upgrade" from the 500 series to the 600 series.
Drive Hub M600-301-200042
Driven Hub M600B100008SRC-E104
Insert M670H5

The hub is about and inch bigger in diameter.

Whichever way you go make sure you get the two pieces aligned as per the installation instructions.  These can be found in their pdf Magnaloy product catalog.  I think a set also came with parts when I received them.
