front driving lights, and Cat power
« on: April 07, 2022, 09:18:21 PM »
Looks like I need a new lens for the drivers side front driving light.  Anyone know where I can find one?
I also am looking for some more HP from the c-9 Cat.  I was told by another previous Beaver owner that there is a plug n play upgrade for that motor.  Has anyone tried one they like?

Thanks

Might first take you coach in for a Cat Scan at a Cat dealer. Their report will detail hp, torque etc when new and at present so you can see if you actually are making less power. Money well spent.

My coach's right driving/fog light has a broken lens.  I do not see any markings on the lights' outside, so have no idea who the manufacturer might be.  Also, it appears the broken lens is not removable and replaceable.  The lens' dimensions is 3 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" high and oblong shaped with the length of the whole light fixture being 2 1/2" from the lens' front to the back of the black plastic fixture.  I have looked on the Walmart and Amazon websites at hundreds of these critters and found none like mine.  My driving lights are fastened by two screws into an oblong hole molded into the fiberglass bumper of the front cap.  If/when you find some, then I would like a lead on them.

Mark,
Keep in mind that you never get something for nothing. Your C9 probably runs at about 204F when running 65 on the flats. Climbing a significant grade probably gets the temp up to 215-220. Adding power increases engine heat and fuel consumption. Consider this as you don't have a lot of temperature margin. I've got a 43' Contessa with a 2006 C9 and notice no performance issues so I agree that you should start with an engine diagnostic. Also, add ons can interfere with the CAT ECU.

When I bought my '06 Monterey both the driving lights had broken lenses.  The lenses were not replaceable.  I found round LED driving light units the same diameter and I have been very happy with them.  Replacing the units was straight forward with no complications.
I really do not understand why you are looking for additional horsepower.  The standard C9 of that vintage was 375 HP.  Yours has already been boosted with the optional package to 400 HP.  Chasing additional horsepower will just burn more fuel and create more heat.  It will not increase engine torque (it will not get you up the hills any faster).  Your Monterey weighs somewhere over 30000 pounds, it will not accelerate like a sports car.  I have owned three CAT powered motorhomes (A 3126 at 300HP, a C7 at 330HP and now a C9 at 400HP).  The C9 is the best of the bunch.  The best you can do is have CAT verify that your motor is producing the correct torque and boost pressure as it did when first tested.

I appreciate the input guys.  I will talk to the Cat people we have here and see if they can do the diagnostics.  This is my first Cat motor.  All good things to consider.  I do really like the way it drives, compared to the 91 Monaco Dynasty  we had for the last 20 years.  I cannot wait to hit the road again this year, as the drive from Tucson back to NW Colo. was the only trip we have had so far.

Thanks all  and we will see you down the raod

You might refer to the linked below general topics discussion from some years ago.  BCS parts sold me (in 2007) their #67070, more commonly known as 048357.  $49 then. It’s 4”.  I had Driving Force Graphics put film on ours to mitigate rocks to some degree.  The wire connectors didn’t match, so I converted them to match.

There are other 4” options, but quality and price varies considerably.  Be sure before ordering that you can adapt the lamp’s mount to the existing bracket, as they differ from an inclusive bracket to a single stud and nut.

Search “ 67070 4" driving light”.  Also check/research Pilot 195 driving lamp, essentially the same unit.  Example:  https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pilot-Automotive-PL-195C-Pilot-4-In-Round-Driving-Light-Kit-44-Clear/40270949
