Transynd is awesome!
« on: April 04, 2013, 03:55:56 AM »
After 124K miles I finally changed to Transynd. WOW! The difference in transmission performance is really noticeable, especially in cruise control's management of shift points. I gave it a fairly good test running though the TX hill country en-route to Port Isabel and was very impressed. Ran like a different coach. Shouldn't have waited so long....

What does it cost to put that in place of what was there?

Richard,
Does your coach have TranSynd or Dexron III in the fluid in the transmission. If you are running Dexron III and you want to change it over to TranSynd, the fluid is a little over $30 a gallon (full retail is a little higher) and your coach takes 7 gallons to drain and refill. If you flush the converter and cooler, it will take about 2 gallons more. It takes me between 30 to 45 minutes to change both filters and drain and refill the transmission. So you will be looking at a labor bill from 1 to 2 hours.

If you have changed from Dextron III to Transynd do you have the same cleaning out of sludge that you have when changing out regular engine  oil to synthetic?  If so should you change transmission lubricant earlier the first time you use Transynd

John,

There is no sludge. There is a magnetic pickup in the drain plug where you may find a thin layer of fine metals that can be wiped off with a paper towel. There are two flters with covers having six bolts each that get removed. The covers come down with the filters. That region of the transmission will drain close to two gallons and the drain plug will drain the other 5 gallons. Mine takes 7.5 gallons to do a change via the drain plugs and filter changes. Allison requires two changes to move to the schedule for Transynd unless you have someone flush the converter and cooler. There are torque specs for the plug and cover bolts, given these are aluminum housings, and if you use a torque wrench it will need to cover the 25 to 35 lb range. Specs are included with the filter kit. I just paid $37 a gallon for Transynd and about $45 for the filter kit locally in Pensacola. It takes me about 4 hours to do the change which I suspect is par for the course, 2X whatever time Garald takes.

Filling method I use.... I take several quick grip clamps and lock the rear hatch open by clamping them on the gas tube shafts. I have about a 4-5ft piece of 1/2 inch plastic pipe that will fit into the dip stick tube. That extends the tube to the back of the open hatch. I clamp a large funnel with a flexible tube that goes into the 1/2 inch pipe to the rear edge of the hatch. I bring this up given I have to gather this "erector set" to do the change. Easier than trying to pour under the hatch. This change is not difficult, just a bit time consuming. There are several O rings on each filter cover that gets replaced as well as one on the drain plug that come with the filter kit.

If you are changing from Dexron III to Transynd for the first time the Allison-recommended procedure is to do what Gerald has outlined and then to drain and flush again after you have run the engine for a  while.  According to Allison, the full properties of Transynd are not realized unless this double drain procedure is performed.  If you choose not to do the "double" there is no harm done, but the resulting diluted mix of fluids will not have all the "magic" properties of Transynd nor should you use the longer "change intervals" recommended for Transynd.

This issue has been widely discussed on other RV forums over the past several years.  There is a retired Allison technical person (who currently runs a fluids testing lab) who posts on lots of forums who has been a source of information for many.  Here's a link to one such thread which discusses the change-over from Dexron to Transynd: http://www.irv2.com/forums/f125/trans-fluid-change-to-transynd-80319.html
