Help: neither flashers or turn signals work now
« on: April 09, 2013, 03:47:24 PM »
I just went to Advanced Auto Parts and bought a replacement more heavier duty flasher thinking my prior one had gone bad.  But not the problem apparently.

Turn signals and emergency flasher was working yesterday.  I camped.  Now testing toads turn signals and don't get anything to toad and not to coach either.  Nothing has changed.  Just demons I suppose.  I was all ready to leave and now stuck here.

Old flasher under steering wheel was "BUSS FLASHER" 552/536 12V, 32CP MAX6.

I replaced original flasher with above several months ago.

New one which did not do the trick just now:
Novita LL552 11-15v DC

I don't know anything else to check.  Headlights work.  No turn signals, no flasher.  By the way, I'm still connected to shore power in this CG in Austin.

We had a similar problem last year. Do your tail lights work? Do your marker lights work? Ours was a relay, in this bay..that was bad. They are marked.

Richard,
Check signals with toad disconnected if you haven't already to make sure problem isn't in the toad.

Toad disconnected and still doesn't work.

Running lights, parking, headlights, marker lights all work.

Turn signals both sides and flashers don't light up, don't click....nothing.

Stan. --- your Monterey was built by Monaco, but my Marquis was built by SMC Corp who also built the Magnum chassis.  I'm told that yours and mine are not wired the same at all.  My bay looks similar to yours, but not the same.

Richard, had the same problem once.  Check the lugs on the strips for power and the ground for those lights in the compartment on your coach.

I have a service tech here who has talked with service at Beaver Coach Sales and now on the phone with a module maker -- something to do with the smart wheel, etc.

Horn doesn't work, turn signals don't work, flasher doesn't flash, nothing clicks or blinks.

Good luck, forgot about the smart wheel.  Don't have one. Thank goodness!

Hope you find a simple fix. I own a Gillig chassis Marquis and currently have a problem with the turn signal handle and switch inside the steering column. It is loose so I have to manually hold the handle when turning to the left. Good luck and let me know if it's something in the steering column.

Richard,
I repaired a friends coach who had the same problem. Under your steering wheel is a coiled ribbon cable (called a clock spring). On his coach two of the lands has broken from fatigue. One was the ground. From your description, it sounds like you lost the ground. On the smart wheel column, about 2/3 of the way down and under the shroud is a connector. If you remove the shroud and disconnect this cable, you can measure continuity through the ribbon cable from this connection point to the connections on your steering wheel. This will tell you whether the problem is in your cable or in the smart wheel module.
Good luck,
Bill

OK -- I'm now all fixed up.  Thank goodness.

Tech guy called Beaver Coach in Bend -- their service tech told him the problem was in the Smart Wheel.  The Beaver guy in Bend said the Smart Wheel controller inside the panel under driver's arm (have to remove padded panel) provided power to the turn signals, horn, and flashers.  Well, turns out the Beaver service tech was wrong.  That error probably accounted for an hour and half of time I paid for and should not have.  But, you know --- you pay for the time it took.  My tech guy called the folks at Smart Wheel and they said no, their SW does not control or feed power to the turn signals, horn, and flasher.

I told him everything was controlled on the outside bay under the driver.  He found where a 15 amp auto reset 12-volt breaker was bad.  He did not have the part on hand.  He installed a jumper to bypass the breaker.  I told him that was not proper to do as Beaver warns about bypassing.  He said he knew and that I should get it fixed when I get to somewhere that has the part.  Otherwise, I would have wait another day or two to get the part and have him come back.  He conceded that he could put in a 20 amp fuse in that jumper --- which he did.  I hope this will get me to Oregon or somewhere in AZ anyway.

Now I have turn signals, horn, and flasher.

The new flasher I installed myself this morning was not a heavy duty one.  I need to find a heavy duty one somewhere.  Would appreciate perhaps a link on Amazon for one I can order when I get to Palm Springs.  Also, I want to carry as spare parts a couple each of 15 amp and 20 amp auto reset 12-v breakers --- just in case.  I presume it's a $5 part.

Richard, there may be a spare somewhere.  If not a napa store should have both the fuse and flasher.

That electrical bay door should have a wiring diagram pasted to it. It will show  which breakers are spares and amperage.

Even though my coach was made by Monaco, and yours by SCM, it appears we had the same problem. In my earlier post I erroneously called it a relay, but it was just as in your coach, a re-settable breaker.

I suspect when Monaco builit Beaver coaches, especially soon after acquiring SCM/Beaver, they did not make many changes to that part of the design.
