Dash AC Fan
« on: October 27, 2014, 06:03:43 PM »
While travelling this week I lost dash AC fan speed #3. Speed #1-#2 and # 4 work fine but #3 speed does not.
#3 is the one I typically use. I checked connections and under dash they appear tight.
Any advise or recommendations appreciated.

Darrell,
Sounds like a bad fan switch. The fan speed is controlled by the amount of voltage applied. Voltage is supplied by a resistor with various taps to provide differing voltages based on the switch position. Since the fan works in 3 of 4 speed selections, the switch probably is dirty / faulty in the #3 position. Try spraying the switch with contact cleaner (make sure it is safe for plastics). That may resolve it.

Ditto but don't overlook the possibility of a bad resistor, not an uncommon problem in some applications.

I experienced a similar problem with my 2003 Monterey fan control and traced the wires behind the dash from the fan control and found a group of wires deep within a split loom. After opening the loom I found one of the crimp type butt connectors had not been crimped or not crimped properly. I replaced the connector, crimped the wires properly and the fan speed returned. Good luck with your search !!!
