Engine Cooling Fan Replacement
« on: October 31, 2016, 03:57:46 PM »
2003 Beaver Monterey recent history - while traveling to Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fest meeting the MI group I noticed my transmission temps were running 15-20 degrees higher than normal for my coach. However, we normally travel the longest distances during the winter going out west for 3 months or so. When I checked things out I discovered I had a shattered fan blade (1 of 8). I found a replacement fan blade assembly & had it shipped to me along the way so I would have it if the problem got worse. Temps got up to 213 but finally made it home. No way to replace the fan blade from above or below w/o removing the CAC. Removed the CAC & found a large portion of the broken blade wedged in front of the engine radiator but no apparent damage & no coolant loss to date. Suggestions had been made to possibly replace the water pump, antifreeze, thermostat, 2 drive belts, Idler/tension pulley, while I was in there - so parts ordered. Discovered the 2 metal radiator transfer pipes were severely rusted & corroded (but not leaking yet) so now would be a good time to replace them too. Naturally, 1 pipe no longer available & the other one was only $906 (plus shipping) from REV. Contacted a local custom exhaust fabricator & he will fabricate new Stainless Steel transfer pipes for about $250 & I have to supply the 2 stainless steel bungs for the lower pipe. Will replace the 4 short radiator hoses as well. Observed my old fan blade was covered with a heavy black dust. Apparently, the black dust was from a combination of exhaust soot (from my recent muffler replacement issue) & the black rubber engine insulation breaking down with most of the reflective foil missing. I will clean the 3 radiator coils again. Found replacement foil insulation at a local RV shop & replaced better than original installation. Will replace all of the remaining components once they arrive &/or get fabricated. Taking numerous photos (before & after for comparisons available) for future reference. Also tracked down info & ordered replacement rear tail light assemblies, as I had a broken lens & the other lens had started to get cloudy due to UV exposure. Hope to get all replaced prior to leaving for a planned trip to Florida in 14 more days. Did I miss anything?  :>)

I just discovered a fan hub bearing could also be replaced so researching to replace that as well. I figure I am $ ahead in PM by replacing a $60 part now, when everything is already broken down, rather than to risk a potential costly breakdown on the road later? Still researching replacement coolants via another posting.

Cooling Fan Replacement Update - all work stated above completed on time & after a 2000 mile trip to FL & back, all is well. Tranny temps are now noticeably lower than previously experienced. NOTE: while the replacement fan blade is not marked front or rear there is a difference & mounting it backwards will result in the fan blades hitting the fan blade guard! .Bart from VA
